The value of plants used for medical purposes is increased from $ 335 million in 1989 to $ 720 million in 1994. The problems faced in production and trade of medicinal and aromatic plants were a also studied. A number of proposals are also presented.Öğe Factors affecting the domestic and imported cattle meat consumption probability of consumers in Turkey(Tarbiat Modares University, 2017) Uzmay A.; Cinar G.The purpose of this study was to determine the socio-economic and intellectual factors affecting the imported meat preferences of consumers and to reveal the personal prioritized preferences of buyers consuming domestic meat and imported meat. The study was carried out in Izmir, the third city of Turkey, where face-to-face interviews were conducted in 300householdswhose occupants shop at hypermarkets where domestic and imported meat is sold. 28.7% of those participating in the study prefer imported meat. As a result of logistic regression, the approach related to the share of cattle meat in the total meat spend, the age factor and the belief that the price of imported cattle meat is low positively affect the probability of consuming imported meat. The consumption of chicken and lamb and marital status has negative effects. The religious belief factor and the perception of taste in those consuming imported meat take priority in the personal preferences of domestic meat consumers. Long-term policies that will ensure stability in the market as a whole are needed in the livestock sector in Turkey. Improvement of meat quality, classification and the rising awareness of consumers regarding quality and farming according to nutritional requirements and the development of certification also have significant importance. © 2017, Tarbiat Modares University. To do so, 84 cotton growers were interviewed in the province of Izmir. According to the results of the study, the cost variable in the cotton farms investigated was calculated as: €1,446.6 ha-1; gross margin, €524.4 ha-1, and the yield, 4,018 kg ha-1. In the studied area, 44% decrease in the area of cotton plantations was observed in 2006 compared to the year 2000. According to the farmers, some of the most important reasons for the decrease in the area of cotton plantations are the decrease (55%) in the producer prices and the increase in the costs (36%) of growing cotton. The possibility of giving up/not giving up cotton production is affected negatively by the social variable of the education level of the farmer, but the cotton growing experience of the farmer, and the farmer's family size, affect the possibility positively. As for the structural /economical variables, farm size negatively affects the possibility but satisfaction from premiums and gross margin have positive effects. Farmers also demand a 90% increase in the premiums and state that they will give up growing cotton unless there are enough subsidies. In this situation, it turns out that to prevent decreases in the area of cotton plantations, it is necessary to lower production costs and provide price stability, along with long term policies consistent with other crops, through which subsidies are determined prior to the season.Öğe Farmers' preferences for organic milk production in Izmir, Turkey(2010) Koyubenbe N.; Miran B.; Konca Y.; Yaylak E.; Uzmay A.; Candemir M.This study was conducted to determine farmers' preference for organic milk production and the factors influencing the degree of farmer preferences in Turkey. The data were obtained from a survey of 96 farmers in Izmir, Turkey. The study was conducted using a two-stage methodology. First, fuzzy pair-wise comparison was applied to calculate the degree of preference. Five important factors were hypothesized to affect the transition to organic milk production; the producers were asked to make pair-wise comparisons among these factors. The reasons for farmers' preferences were then determined using a seemingly unrelated regression. The results showed that the most important factors for producers are health of consumer and guarantee of sale. Preferences for these factors are mainly influenced by producers' level of education and farm size. © 2010 Academic Journals Inc.Öğe Food Security and Other Relevant Concepts about Food, Differences and Relationships; [Gıda Güvencesi ve Gıdayla ilgili Diğer Temel Kavramlar, Farklılıklar ve İlişkiler](Turkish Journal of Agricultural Economics, 2022) Koç G.; Uzmay A.Purpose: This study has been carried out to explain the basic concepts that are commonly used today in research and discussions on agriculture and food today, and it has three main objectives. The first is to define the current concept by examining the changes in the concept of food security in the historical process; the second is to explain nutrition security, hunger and malnutrition, the right to food, food sovereignty, food self-sufficiency, and food safety, and the third is to reveal the relationship and fundamental differences between food security and other related concepts. Design/ Methodology/ Approach: The study was conducted using the literature review method. Food security and other concepts are explained using relevant literature. Findings: Historically, the concept of food security has undergone various changes as a result of developments in agriculture and food, as well as the global economic and political situation, and has taken on its current form. The actors and sustainability dimensions have been added to the availability, accessibility, utilization, and stability dimensions of food security with the effects of global developments. In addition, the terms food and nutrition security have recently been used together. Food self-sufficiency and food safety are among the necessary preconditions for ensuring food security. On the other hand, it is noteworthy that the term food safety is misused by some organizations in Turkish literature instead of food security. Originality/Value: In this study, many different concepts related to food are explained in detail. In this context, this study is a guide that enables the correct and proper use of terms such as food security, nutrition security, food sovereignty, right to food, food self-sufficiency, and food safety in Turkish literature by eliminating conceptual confusion. © 2022, Turkish Journal of Agricultural Economics. The study conducted interviews with 300 households in Izmir province. According to the results of logistic regression analysis, gender, level of income, number of people in the household, beef consumption, and whether the interviewed individual has the highest income in his or her household affect the probability of sheep meat consumption. While the personal preferences of regular sheep meat consumers vary according to their red meat consumption, willingness to pay based on labelling is $1.62/kg.Öğe Technical and economic efficiency in cotton production in the Aegean region, Turkey(WFL Publisher Ltd., 2013) Isin S.; Isin F.; Uzmay A.As well as all other sectors, efficient use of limited resources has great importance in agriculture for sustainability of farms. In farms, ascertaining the state of resource use; detecting the causes of inefficiency, and therefore, taking necessary precautions can be achieved through efficiency analysis. By doing so, rational use of resources can be investigated and profit maximization can be realized. In this respect there is no doubt that the achievements of individual farms will contribute to agriculture sector and the whole national economy accordingly. This study aims at ascertaining the technical and economic efficiency of cotton production, which has great importance for national agriculture sector. In the study, the data, which was for the cotton production of the year 2008, derived from 204 cotton farms in the Aegean region in Turkey through a questionnaire, was used. Efficiency scores of cotton farms were measured by using the data envelopment analysis. Technical and economic efficiency scores were found to be 0.792 and 0.596, respectively, under the assumption of variable returns to scale. Additionally in order to determine the factors affecting efficiency scores, Tobit model was used. The study also emphasizes the precautions to be taken into account in order to enable rational input used both technically and economically.
