| dc.description.abstract | This thesis examines Geoffrey Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales and the Gawain poet’s Sir Gawain and the Green Knight from the scope of new materialism and material ecocriticism theories. Rejecting the anthropocentric approaches established by the Cartesian system of thought, this study will explore the agency of matt er in both narratives. This thesis will examine selected stories from The Canterbury Tales and the poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight from medieval narratives, applying the storied matter theory developed by Serpil Oppermann and Serenella Iovino to inves tigate the agency of matter in constructing narratives with other matters. These medieval narratives will be analyzed from a materialist perspective, exploring the relationship between activity, agency, and the transformative power of matter and narratives . The study will also analyze the effects of living matter on human and non human entities. In this way, the influence of posthuman thought and the concepts of matter and non human agency on the stories of leading poems of medieval English literature, name ly, The Canterbury Tales and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight , will be To demonstrate this effect, this study will draw upon the theories of ecocriticism, posthumanism, and new materialism, which form the roots of the material ecocriticism develop ed by Serpil Oppermann and Serenella Iovino. In this study, Karen Barad’s theory of “agential realism,” Jane Bennett’s “thing power,” and Stacy Alaimo’s concepts of “trans corporeality” will be examined in both late medieval works and analyzed under the fr amework of storied matter. | |
| dc.description.abstract | Bu tez Geoffrey Chaucer’ın The Canterbury Tales adlı eserini ve Gawain şairinin Sir Gawain and the Green Knight şiirini yeni maddecilik ve maddeci ekoeleştiri kuramları perspektifinden incelemektedir. | |
