Özet
In order to obtain a quantitative estimation of blood loss from the gastro-intestinal tract the patient's erythrocytes were tagged with chromium 51 and the activity of this substance was estimated in the 24-hour faeces. Measurements were made with a sctintillation counter in a bore-hole crystal (60 × 60 mm sodium iodide crystal) in a circular unit scale in glass containers with a content of 0.5 litre. The amount of blood loss is calculated from the ration of faecal activity to blood activity. The different readings due to the quantity of faeces that were found in spite of equal activity were equalized by factors that took into account the height of the contents of the container, so that great homogenization of the faeces could be dispensed with. The mean value of normal daily loss of blood from the gastro-intestinal tract is 0,78 ml, 2 ?=0,78±1,1 ml. It was found possible to estimate gastrointestinal blood loss in a variety of diseases. The value of the procedure in diagnosis is discussed. © 1964 Springer-Verlag.
