ABSTRACT The Exposure to Exhaust Gas Lead of Traffic Policemen at Street Intersections With High Traffic FIow in 1997 the exposure to the exhaust gas lead of 221 male traffic policemen on duty at Adana Provincial Poliçe Directorate were examined. The venous blood and urine samples were taken in groups consisted of 118 policemen working at street intersections with high traffic flow in the city and of 103 policemen \vorking at other places in the city. The blood lead levels were measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Hemoglobin levels (Hb), hematocrits (Htc), redblood celi counts (Rbc), red-blood celi volumes (Mcv) were measured by Coulter T 660 apparatus. Urinary coproporphyrin III levels were tested. in traffic policemen group mean levels for blood lead, Hb, Htc, Rbc and Mcv were found to be 34,2±14,5 jıg/100 mi, 15,3+1,4 g/di, 45,3+3,7 %, 5,1+0,4 x!012/l and 89,5+5,0 fi, respectively. in other policemen group mean levels for blood lead, Hb, Htc, Rbc and Mcv were found to be 29,5±11,3 ng/100 mi, 15,0±1,1 g/di, 44,2±3,2 %, 4,9±0,4 x!0l2/l and 89,6+4,6 fl, respectively. it was conchıded that the exhaust gas exposure affected the traffic policemen with a statistical significance. While no statistical difference was observed for mean Hb values and mean Mcv values behveen the two groups, Hct and Rbc mean values were statistically higher in traffic policemen group. Urinary coproporphyrin HI positivity were similar for both groups. KEY WORDS: Exhaust gas, lead exposure, traffic policemen, other policemen. IX
