PURPOSE: To evaluate the posterior segment involvement in Behçet's disease. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 114 eyes 59 patients (40 male, 19 female) with Behçet' s disease were evaluated retrospectively. One hundred and fourteen of. RESULTS: the ages of the patients ranged between 18- 51 (35.8±7.8) years. Retinal involvement was present in 78 of 114 eyes (68%). There was bilateral involvement in 31 and unilateral involvement in 12 patients. in the eyes involved, most frequently detected retinal pathologies were macular edema (29.5%), vasculitis (27%) and optic atrophy (25.6%). Hyperfluorescence due to vascular permeability and macular edema, early hypofluorescence and late hyperfluorescence (staining) due to the optic atrophy was the most common angiographic findings. Optic atrophy, macular scar formation, macular hole, macular edema and cystoid macular edema were the pathologies that mostly disturbed the best corrected visual acuity. CONCLUSION: Posterior segment involvement was established quite frequently during the natural course of Behçet's disease. We should diagnose and evaluate these pathologies in order to prevent visual handicaps and to determine precise timing and regimen of the treatment.
