VI ABSTRACT RELEVANCE OF APPAREL COMPANIES TO COMPUTER AIDED DESIGN (CAD), PATTERN MAKING, MODEL APPLICATION AND MARKER MAKING SYSTEMS ÖNDO?AN, Ziynet PhD in Textile Engineering Supervisor : Assoc. Prof. Dr. M. Çetin ERDO?AN November, 1997, 119 pages Towards the 2000s just as the world is entering a process of disintegration as well as recovery, Türkiye, thanks to its cultural and historical accumulation, her economic and social geography, has assumed a great importance for the EC as well as the Commonwealth of Independent States and the Muslim countries. The reason for this the fact that Türkiye takes part in a number of Western organizations, such as NATO, OECD and EC in addition to some other organizations largely composed of Muslim countries, such as KEIB, OIC and ECO. The textile and apparel sectors, which account for 35-40 percent of Türkiye's overall exports, have apparently played an important role in national economy recently. Having achieved a great development both in production and machinery during the past 15 years, the apparel sector has now created its own line of trademarks and reached a level where it is capable of producing outfits with high international added value. This brunch of industry, which initially enjoyed a strong workforce due to inexpensive labour, displayed consistency with national conditions; however, the fact that today's labour is not as inexpensive asvn it used to be has started to constitute a problem for Turkiye,as is the case for all developed countries. While the international economy is moving towards a united market through globolization, it is apparent that the competition expecting Türkiye in these markets will also be quit though. Measures to which developed countries resort so as to prevent the weakening of competitive forces in textile can be collected in two groups : - Reducing production costs through technological renovation, attaching new features to the products and - Introducing protective measures in international trade. Competitive strength of the companies involved in the apparel sector, standardization of their products and their level of development all depend on the high technology they posses and provision of labour that is capable of handling such technology. In a broader conseption, effective technological development is not only restricted to otomation in machinery, but also involves production marketing and administration in addition to all main phases in production. Moveover, it includes such computer systems as CAD/CAM and MIS as well. It was seen in this study as a result of interpreting the graphs and statistical values prepared according to data available, that during pattern preparation, pattern grading and marking processes the efficiency of CAD systems, which are being widely used throughout the world, but introduced in our country in mid-1980s, had been superior to manual methods with respect to processing periods and material wastage. Despite the fact that the CAD system failed to demonstrate the expected advantages in certain phases, the reasons behind this and some solution suggestions were investigated. In the end, in addition to the speed it offers, the CAD system reduces production costs by means of the economy it provides in labour and material use. All these increase the competitive ability of the companies on the market.
