| dc.description.abstract | The first chapter of the dissertation scrutinizes the advent of ecocriticism as a theory. Analyzing the relationship between ecology and literature, it elaborates on their mutual interaction, and on how the literary text is influenced by the environmental factors. Moreover, it focuses on the ongoing development of the ecocritical theory, which has flourished under the influence of various literary traditions. The chapter also highlights the significant contribution of certain pre-ecocritical works that have paved the way for the advent of ecocriticism as a theory. Lastly, the chapter thoroughly analyzes a number of prominent environmentalists' works written with the aim of framing and laying the foundation of the ecocritical theory. The second chapter clarifies which concepts within the ecocritical studies will be employed to conduct the study. The chapter examines the approach known as the material turn, which has recently developed within the field of ecocriticism. Referring to the ideologies which ascribe a secondary role to both the body and the physical environment, the discussion is centered on what exactly the material turn challenges and what concepts it offers as an alternative. Assuming the material turn's alternative approach as a vantage point, the third chapter analyzes two of John Donne's poems – "The First Anniversary" and Metempsychosis. Adopting an ecocritical perspective, this study intends to scrutinize the interaction between the physical environment and both the human and the non-human corporeality in Donne's poems. Moreover, it seeks to answer the questions as to whether Donne follows an environmental agenda in his poems, and whether he offers environmental viewpoints. | en_US |
| dc.description.abstract | Tezin ilk bölümü Eko-Eleştiri'nin eleştirel bir kuram olarak nasıl ortaya çıktığını anlatmaktadır. Ekoloji ve edebiyat ilişkisini inceleyerek edebiyatın fiziksel çevre ile nasıl bir etkileşim halinde olduğunu ve edebi metnin çevresel faktörlerle nasıl şekillendiğini tartışmaktadır. Ayrıca Eko-Eleştirel teorinin günümüze kadar olan gelişimine odaklanarak, hangi edebi geleneklerin etkisiyle zenginleştiği üzerinde durmaktadır. Bunun yanında, Eko-Eleştirel teori ortaya çıkmadan evvel yazılan çevreci eserlere de değinilmiş ve bu çalışmaların teoriye katkıları üzerinde durulmuştur. Çevre çalışmaları alanında araştırma yapan önemli isimlerin Eko-Eleştirel teoriyi sağlam temellere oturtmak ve şekillendirmek adına yaptıkları çalışmalar ele alınmış ve bu çalışmaların öneminden bahsedilmiştir. Tezin ikinci bölümü, Eko-eleştiri alanının tam olarak hangi noktalarından faydalanılarak tez çalışmasının yürütüleceğini anlatmaktadır. Bu başlık altında Eko-Eleştiri alanının son zamanlarda ortaya çıkan the material turn (maddesel dönüşüm) adlı yaklaşımı irdelenmektedir. Bedeni ve fiziksel çevreyi, ikincilleştiren ideolojilere değinilerek the material turn'ün tam olarak hangi değer yargılara karşı durduğu vurgulanmaktadır. Ayrıca bu akımın alternatif olarak ne gibi yaklaşımlar sunduğundan bahsedilmektedir. Son olarak, tezin üçüncü bölümünde özellikle the material turn'ün alternatif yaklaşımlarını temel alınarak, şair John Donne'ın iki şiiri "The First Anniversary" ve Metempsychosis analiz edilmektedir. Bu çalışma, Donne'ın eserlerinde fiziksel çevrenin, insan ve insan dışı bedenlerin etkileşimini Eko-Eleştirel bir açıdan incelemektedir. Çalışmanın sonunda şairin şiirlerinde çevreci bir tutum izleyip izlemediği ve bu eserlerinde alternatif çevreci yaklaşımlar sunup sunmadığı sorularına cevap aranacaktır. | en_US |
