Özet
Maionia, hem Lydia'nın kuzeybatı bölgesinin büyük bir kısmını kaplayan ve antik dönemde katakekaumene adı verilenvolkanik arazi üzerinde yer alan bir bölgenin ve hem de bu arazinin batı kısmında kurulmuş olan bir Lydia kentinin adı olarak karşımıza çıkmaktadır. Bugünkü Gökçeören (eskiden Menye) köyüne lokalize edilen yerleşimin tarihi bazı edebi metinlerde kaydedilen erken ipucları bir yana bırakılırsa tarihi verilerden anlaşıldığına göre hellenistik döneme kadar gitmektedir. Bununla birlikte, Maionia'nın Augustus döneminde şehir statüsüne kavuştuğu ve ilk defa Neron döneminde sikke bastığı anlaşılmaktadır. Roma imparatorluk devrinde kentte basılan bronz sikkeler üzerinde hem kent yöneticilerinin isimleri hem de burada tapım gören tanrılar yer almaktadır. Maionia is understood both as a region; called Katakekaumene in antiquity, which is placed on a volcanic area and covers most of the northwestern part of Lydia, and as a Lydian city founded in the western part of this volcanic area The settlement is localised to modern village of Gökçeören (formerly Menye). Its history, according to historical evidences, goes back to the Hellenistic period, when the early clues documented in some literary sources are excluded. Moreover, it is attested that Maionia reached in a city status in the reign of Augustus and that she minted coins in the reign of Nero for the first time. The bronze coins minted by the city in Roman Imperial period bear both the names of the city-administrators and gods worshipped in the city. However, the history and the religious structure are attested more from the epigraphic finds discovered in the region, the dedicatory stelai found in Menye and its environs point out that the Mother Goddess Artemis Anaitis and Men were widely worshipped in the region, and that epithets of Men, such as Aksiottenos and Artemidorou are regional. Besides these, local cults of Greek gods, Zeus and Apollon for instance, are attested. On the other hand, epigraphical researches show that there are numerous minor settlements around the city of Maionia.
