Purpose: This study has been carried out to explain the basic concepts that are commonly used today in research and discussions on agriculture and food today, and it has three main objectives. The first is to define the current concept by examining the changes in the concept of food security in the historical process; the second is to explain nutrition security, hunger and malnutrition, the right to food, food sovereignty, food self-sufficiency, and food safety, and the third is to reveal the relationship and fundamental differences between food security and other related concepts. Design/ Methodology/ Approach: The study was conducted using the literature review method. Food security and other concepts are explained using relevant literature. Findings: Historically, the concept of food security has undergone various changes as a result of developments in agriculture and food, as well as the global economic and political situation, and has taken on its current form. The actors and sustainability dimensions have been added to the availability, accessibility, utilization, and stability dimensions of food security with the effects of global developments. In addition, the terms food and nutrition security have recently been used together. Food self-sufficiency and food safety are among the necessary preconditions for ensuring food security. On the other hand, it is noteworthy that the term food safety is misused by some organizations in Turkish literature instead of food security. Originality/Value: In this study, many different concepts related to food are explained in detail. In this context, this study is a guide that enables the correct and proper use of terms such as food security, nutrition security, food sovereignty, right to food, food self-sufficiency, and food safety in Turkish literature by eliminating conceptual confusion. © 2022, Turkish Journal of Agricultural Economics.
