Current Use of Staging Laparotomy in Hodgkin's Disease the aim and necessity of staging laparotomy for Hodgkin's Disease are evaluated retrospectively in the General Surgery Department of Ege University Hospital between January 1985 and January 1995. the patients were 19 males and 9 females, aging between 15 and 64 (mean, 38.2 year). in the postoperative period there was no morbidity or mortality due to the procedure, and mean hospital stay was 5 days. the laparotomy results are compared with thepreoperative abdominal ultrasound, computerized tomog-raphy, liver function tests and the necessity for this operation is discussed. After the histopathological examination, 12 patients (43%) were found to have subdiaphragmatic disease. When the results of pre-operative clinical staging.and histopathological examination were compared, 7patients (25%) were upstaged, and 3 patients (11%) were downstaged. in 18 patients (64%) preoperative staging correlated well with the postoperative staging,.
