dc.description.abstract68 SUMMARY The world which we may think as a big and living orga nism faced the dangerous of environmental pollution in the last centuries by the reason of increasing to life level developing of industry and technology. This condition cau sed big changes in either sea or land flora. Algae belonging to sea flora and food chain obtain their food from the environment they exist and also especi ally from the sea where some various industrial wastes are ejected in addition to house -wastes. The algae accumulate some ions of metals existed in water in their bodies. The fact that, the amounts of elements in the living- algae are investigated give us some knowledge about the quantative amount of physical change in that environment. Izmir is one of the most important industrial and commercial center of Turkey. By the reasons of wrong in dustrial places, wrong settlements and faster population increases, Izmir Bay was subjected to pollution unawares. If we look at the Bay we can see how fast the natural body is spoiled from healthy, estetic and touristic sides* The fact that the natural ecosystems are become spoi led and determined the differences in ecosystems are very important from the view of the pollution» In this study, the distribution of trace elements in algae samples which were handpicked from Izmir Inner Bay was determined and the effects of wastes öf the city on the algae were tried to investigate. Algae investigated for this purpose were handpicked from 9 different places- 69 of Inner Bay in March, April, May, June and July in 1986. Algae that are studied Rhodophyta ' (Gracilaria verrucosa (Hud.), Polysiphonia variegata (Ag.)t Gracilaria conf er - voides), Phaeophyta (Cystoseira sp. (Good, et wood). Ectocarpus sp.), Chlorophyta (Ulva lactura L* (sansu cato), rJlva rigida (CAg.), Codium sp., Snteremorpha sp., Cladophora sp., Briyopsis plumosa). Elements that were measured are Mn, Fa, Pb, Cu, Cd, Zn and Mg. Measure ments vera done by using AAS. The changes in amounts of metals ions absorbed by algae in İzmir Bay where sea pollution is in high level showed the differences according to species of algae and pollution of Bay. These results show that the pollution caused by Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, Hg, Pb in Bay are increased and spread. £m @men_US
