The introduction of a novel ionic environment, which is composed of a large, asymmetric organic cation and inorganic (or organic) anion that loosely fit together, is extending the properties and classical applications of chemical/biochemical and industrial performances. In this Feature, we discuss the recent uses of ionic liquids in enzyme activation and their combination with nanosized materials and electrode structures to enhance the sensing performance of biobased sensing devices.en_US
