There is strong evidence that Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is an effective treatment for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD); however, data regarding its long-term efficacy remain limited. This study aimed to investigate the long-term effects of Cognitive Behavioral Group Therapy (CBGT) on symptom severity, social and neurocognitive functions in individuals diagnosed with OCD. Another aim of the study was to compare the long-term effects of CBGT in OCD patients who completed and those who did not complete the therapy. The study includes long-term follow-up data from a thesis completed in 2018 involving 37 patients. Twenty-one participants, 13 from the group who completed CBGT and eight from the group who did not, were re-evaluated six years after therapy. Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale (YBOCS), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Obsessive Compulsive Inventory-Revised (OCI-R), Obsessive Beliefs Questionnaire-44 (OBQ-44), Short Form-36, Autism Spectrum Quotient, Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test, Wisconsin Card Sorting Test, Trail Making Test, Stroop Test and Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test were administered to the participants. The results were compared with the data from the previous study. In the group who completed CBGT, the changes in YBOCS, BDI, OCI-R subscales (hoarding, checking, obsessing and washing), and OBQ-44 subscales (responsibility/threat estimation and importance/control of thoughts) scores before therapy (T0), after completing therapy (T1), and six years after therapy (T2) were found to be statistically significant. No changes were detected in social and neurocognitive tests. When the clinical assessment scales at T0 and T2 were compared between the groups who completed and did not complete CBGT, similar changes in scale scores were found. When social and neurocognitive tests were compared, no significant differences were found between the groups at the assessment time points. The findings indicate that treatment gains following CBGT are maintained in the long term in patients with OCD. The fact that there were clinically significant improvements in the group who did not complete CBGT and that this group had a continued high rate of medication use suggests that long-term continuation of any treatment strategy in patients with OCD may be associated with favorable outcomes. The findings from the test results indicate that CBGT has no long-term effect on social and neurocognitive functions.
