Özet
Steve Reich’ın Music For 18 Musicians adlı yapıtı, bir Ewe müziği olan Gahu,
Bali Gamelan’ı, Notre-Dame polifoni okulundan Perotin’in kanonik yaklaşımları ve caz
saksafoncusu John Coltrane’in modalitesi gibi müzik kültürü açısından birbirinden
For 18 Musicians olmak üzere, gerek besteleme teknikleri gerekse felsefi açıdan
Steve Reich's Music for 18 Musicians is a masterpiece that combines the technique and understanding of many different disciplines in terms of music culture, such as Gahu of Ewe music, Bali Gamelan, Perotin's canonical approaches from Notre- Dame polyphony school and the modality of jazz saxophonist John Coltrane. In this thesis, compositions of Steve Reich, who is accepted as a minimalist composer, have been examined in terms of both compositional techniques and philosophical aspects, especially Music for 18 Musicians, and their contributions to minimalism have been discussed. Besides, it has been aimed to determine the basic principles and historicalcultural characteristics of minimalism. In this context, the philosophical contradictions between Abstract Expressionism and Minimalism movements have been examined and the reflections of these conflicts on Steve Reich's music have been revealed. In addition, the composer's composition techniques have been studied and a new piece of Minimalist music has been composed under present conditions.
