Parameters are usually estimated by the least squares (LS) method in the pure autoregressive (AR) process. The LS method can be used when some assumptions are fulfilled. When some assumptions are not fulfilled or outliers exist in the data set, there may be big losses in the efficiency of the LS estimators. Robust alternatives were suggested for this reason. In this study, in order to investigate the amount of efficiency loss in the LS estimators when there are outliers in the data set, the efficiencies of the LS estimators are compared with the robust alternatives through simulation. The study also includes the comparison results among the robust methods in detail. The simulation study including LS, Huber M, Tukey M, S and MM estimators was carried out with the R programming language by using Monte Carlo technique in AR(1) model parameter estimation, for two cases, when the error term is standard normally distributed without outliers and for the Dixon's outlier model. In the simulations, the efficiency of the aforementioned estimators for the varying values of the autoregressive parameter and sample size examined. Under the Dixon's outlier model, the simulation results show that the LS estimators are always the worst except for the variance of the error term for which they are the best. For autoregressive parameter, it depends on various factors like the sample size and the value of the autoregressive parameter. Additionally, at the end of the study, a real life data application is performed. This study shows the weaknesses the LS method has under several conditions but also makes contribution on which robust method to choose under these situations as well.
