Özet
Amerika Birleşik Devletleri'nin zengin ve karmaşık bir tarihi vardır; bu tarih, yüzyıllar boyunca süregelen bir evrimi ifade eder. Bu süreçte, dünyanın farklı bölgelerinden gelen göç dalgaları, özellikle ABD'de, çok sayıda ırk, etnik grup ve topluluğun Amerikan toplumuna katılımını sağlamıştır. Bu çeşitli toplumlar arasında, Meluncan'lar gibi bazı topluluklar büyük ölçüde yeterince temsil edilmemiştir. Throughout this evolution, waves of migration from across the globe have introduced a multitude of races, ethnicities, and communities to the American landscape, particularly within the USA. Among this diverse society, some communities, such as the Melungeons, have remained largely underrepresented. To promote awareness and foster a deeper understanding of this group's identity, culture, and literature, it is crucial to explore both how Melungeons view themselves and how they are portrayed by others. This involves a thorough analysis of autobiographical and biographical works that address the past, present, and identity of Melungeons, thereby illuminating significant aspects of their community and its connections. Historically, the narrative surrounding Melungeons has often been shaped by myths, stereotypes, and biases, which have dictated the level of scholarly interest in their story. The objective of this dissertation is to amplify the voices of the Melungeon people, whose history and culture have not received the attention they warrant. Due to the limited resources available on the Melungeons, information, research, and studies about them are still in their infancy.The examination of the life stories of the Melungeons is crucial for illuminating both overlooked and reminisced aspects of their lived experiences. To effectively achieve this objective, it is essential to engage with the theoretical frameworks and concepts that underpin the analysis of autobiographical and biographical literature pertaining to this group. Initially, a detailed analysis of the technical aspects of biography and autobiography is warranted, emphasizing their foundational components. Following this, the concept of ethnicity warrants critical exploration to facilitate a comprehensive understanding of the diverse communities that comprise the Melungeon population. Further, the investigation of themes such as displacement, homeland, and exile is essential, as these concepts hold significant relevance in the context of American history and profoundly influence the lived realities of the Melungeons. An examination of ethnic identity is likewise imperative for a nuanced understanding of how Melungeon identities are represented in various literary and cultural works. This inquiry aims to examine various aspects of multiculturalism, elucidating the role of immigration in shaping the social landscape of American society. Special emphasis will be placed on the expressions of multiculturalism within Melungeon communities. This comprehensive approach not only deepens the discourse surrounding Melungeons but also contributes to broader considerations of identity and community within the framework of American history. The research and fieldwork concentrated on the historical and cultural backgrounds of the Melungeons, with the goal of revealing significant insights about their arrival in America. It presented information on the waves of migration that included the Melungeons to enhance understanding of this aspect. By exploring the historical context, the formation of the Melungeon community in America and its subsequent development was emphasized. To comprehend how the Melungeons evolved into a community, it is crucial to investigate the various theories regarding their origins. The distinctive traits of Appalachian literature, where the Melungeons established their community, have been identified and delineated. Furthermore, the elements of autobiography, biography, and memoir, prevalent in Appalachian literature, warrant analysis. To gain a comprehensive understanding, it is also important to scrutinize Melungeon representations in literary works. To this end, key novels and specific dramas that feature Melungeon depictions were thoroughly analyzed. In light of the concepts, theories, and historical, cultural, and literary characteristics related to the Melungeons, we have analyzed three selected autobiographical works and three biographical works about this community. First, we examined the autobiographical works, focusing on how they represent Melungeon identities, cultures, and experiences. Then, we turned to the biographical works to explore their literary approaches to the lives of the Melungeons. Through the analysis of these selected works, we uncovered insights about Melungeon identity, culture, and their experiences, bringing to light many forgotten aspects of their history that deserve recognition.
