dc.description.abstract | The number connection test, is regarded as a sensitive psychometric measure for the assessment of subclinical hepatic encephalopathy (SHE). Review of the literature regarding the diagnostic sensitivity of the number connection test, however, shows that the scoring of the tests results differs in terms of age, education and culture. Thus, there is a need for normative data. In this study NCT-A was applied to 188 healthy volunteers (age: 18 to 76 years) with a minimum of primary school education and without any disease which might effect the test results. The completion time of the test was 59±3 sec between subjects and substantially longer than indicated in the literature. Women completed the test more slowly than men but the difference was insignificant (62±4 sec vs. 54±4 sec, p=0.15). Subjects above the age of 35 years were significantly slower than the younger group but this difference was not maintained within the university group. In conclusion, there was a significant influence of age and education on the results. It is very difficult to assess generalized normal values and age and education- corrected normative data are needed. The number connection test may be more useful for follow-up rather than diagnosis of SHE. | en_US |
