Sixteen children with recovering bacterial meningitis were evaluated for neurological sequelae. A protocol consisting of a standard neurological examination, audiological examination (auditory brainstem responses-ABR), visual evoked potential (VEP), electroencephalography (EEG), and neuropsychological tests was applied to the patients. A definite neurologic sequelae was found in % 18 of the patients. Three patients had low intelligence and one of them also had sensorineural hearing loss (6 %). Seven of the patients (44 %) had asymptomatic electrophysiological abnormalities on EEG and/or VEP. In conclusion, although the findings support the existence of postmeningitis sequelae, the rate of the deficitis in this group of patients was found lower than that the rate of previous studies.
