A photonic sensor system for real-time monitoring of turbidity changes in aquaculture
(Wiley, 2024) Tolon, Mustafa Tolga; Tokac, Adnan; Kostak, Enis N.; Strehse, Christoph
ObjectiveThe objective of this study was to test the compatibility and performance of a developed photonic sensor system, which can serve as a dependable and practical device for continuous monitoring of turbidity changes in aquaculture tanks.MethodsThe fabricated photonic sensor system consisted of an integrated data logger and sensor probe. The sensor probe exhibited a precise emission of infrared light at a wavelength of 850 nm. Moreover, the sensor evaluates the ambient light across the red-green-blue spectrum. To ensure accuracy and reliability, the entire system underwent a thorough calibration process, referencing nephelometric turbidity unit values acquired through a specialized handheld turbidimeter. Rigorous trials were systematically conducted in 600-L seawater tanks featuring tubular sea cucumber Holothuria tubulosa and Gilt-head Sea Bream Sparus auratus to ensure the sensitivity and robustness of the photonic sensor system to the aquaculture environment.ResultA calibration curve revealed a significant correlation between the infrared channel values of the sensor (photon counts) and the turbidity values measured by the turbidimeter. The photonic sensor effectively captured turbidity changes in the aquaculture tanks, with significant differences observed between the tanks. The sensor performance was evaluated in trials with Gilt-head Sea Bream, which showed sensitivity to high turbidity changes. The photonic sensor system accurately reflects turbidity changes continuously using its own active light source, independent of ambient light intensity, which is essential for turbid water conditions or for taking measurements in total darkness.ConclusionThe photonic sensor is a reliable tool for the continuous and accurate monitoring of turbidity changes in aquaculture systems. However, there are specific usage limitations under low-turbidity conditions that can be improved in further studies. Impact statement The photonic sensor system, as designed for this study, is capable of accurately measuring turbidity changes using its own active light source independent of ambient light intensity, allowing 24-h monitoring of turbid water conditions or taking measurements in total darkness. Moreover, this system may be useful in detecting turbidity changes associated with algal blooms in sea cages or from poor water treatment performance of filtration systems in recirculating aquaculture.

Determination of Hobbyist Preferences for Livebearer Ornamental Fish Attributes by Conjoint Analysis
    (2018) Tolon, Mustafa Tolga
This study investigates preferences of ornamental fish hobbyists on selected attributes of livebearer fish species guppy (Poecilia reticulate),golden swordtail (Xiphophorous hellerii), platy (Xiphophorous maculatus) and molly (Mollienesia spp.) using adaptive conjoint analysis. Computer-based surveys were conducted with 453 livebearer hobbyists in İzmir city (Turkey) between September and December, 2014. Results indicated the most important attributes are colour, price, species and size, which have significance for local livebearer producers, importers and retailers in planning their production and market strategies. Conjoint analysis determined price to be the second factor influencing the purchase behaviour of hobbyists’ with a 25% relative importance. Colour attribute is the leading factor by 28% relative importance. Multicolour, which is the most leading attribute level, got the highest part-worth score as 3.36. Market simulation indicated that nearly 62 % of the hobbyists’ like to purchase a medium size multicolour guppy with 1€/fish price and such favourite attribute combination would get nearly 42% of the livebearers market share. the overall results of this study indicate a promising market share for locally-bred livebearer fish in a variety of colours and sizes, but there is a considerable resistance to the price attribute which should be optimised by production and marketing strategies.

Effects of various stocking densities on hatching and survival rates of sea cucumber Holothuria tubulosa eggs (Gmelin, 1788)
(2018) Günay, Deniz; Tolon, Mustafa Tolga; Emiroğlu, Dilek
In this study, it was aimed to determine the opening and survival rates of Holothuria tubulosa eggs at four different stocking densities (1,5,15,30 eggs / ml) and to determine the effect of stocking density on egg size and larval size in different stages. Fertilized Holothuria tubulosa eggs were stocked in cylindrical conical collectors with a capacity of 30 l. Eggs were counted under light microscope at fertilization, early gastrulation, late gastrulation and hatching stages. It was found that there is an inverse relationship between stock intensity and opening rate (r = -0.848; p<0.001). The lowest hatching and survival rate was determined in 30 eggs / ml group (p <0.05). However, different stocking densities did not affect the diameter of the egg in different embryological stages (p> 0.05) and the length of early auricularia larva at 65 h (p> 0.05). As a result, the optimal stocking density for the highest hatching and survival rates of the fertilized eggs of Holothuria tubulosa was determined as 1-5 eggs / ml.

Gonadal development of the holothurian Holothuria polii (Delle Chiaje, 1823) in spawning period at the Aegean Sea (Mediterranean Sea)
(2019) Tolon, Mustafa Tolga; Engin, Serhat
The Mediterranean Sea cucumbers including Holothuria polii has become commercially important in international trade due to the high demand of consumers from Far East countries. Sea cucumbers fisheries is a valuable income for the regional fishermen but natural stocks endangered by overfishing in recent years. Fisheries regulations and aquaculture studies are important precautions for preserving natural stocks. All these efforts are based on reproduction biology of this species which slightly differed among regions. In this study, the reproduction biology including morphological characteristics, gonadosomatic index and gonadal development stages of H.polii at the eastern coast of Aegean Sea (Izmir, Turkey) were investigated during the reproduction (spawning) period from July to October 2018. Gonads and gonad sections of 60 sea cucumbers (120.60 ± 19.56 g) have been observed by macroscopic and microscopic inspections. Three gonadal development stages have been identified by histologic observations as mature (III), spawning (IV) and post-spawning stage (V) in gonadal tubules. Results indicate that both female and male gonads are at mature and spawning stage in July and all gonads are at post-spawning stage in October. The mean gonad weight was 12.53 ± 1.33 g at the beginning of the spawning period (July) and 1.87 ± 0.58 g at the end of the spawning period (October). Gonadosomatic index decreased from 17.53 ± 0.02% (July) to 3.37 ± 0.01% (October) after spawning. The gonadosomatic index, gonad weight, and spawning were related to the seawater temperature. According to this study, the spawning period of H.polii at the eastern coasts of the Aegean Sea starts in July and completely ends in October. As a result, the data related to the reproduction biology in spawning period of H.polii would guide stock management and artificial breeding of this species under controlled conditions

Observation of Vibrio mediterranei (Pujalte and Garay 1986) / Vibrio shiloi (Kushmaro et al. 2001) bacteria from skin ulcers of the cultured sea cucumber Holothuria poli (Delle Chiaje, 1823)
(Ege Univ, Fac Fisheries, 2021) Tolon, Mustafa Tolga; Karacalar, Ulviye; Sirin, Caner
Skin ulcer syndrome is frequently reported as a serious disease affecting the health, growth and mortality of stocks in sea cucumber aquaculture. In this study, bacteria isolated predominantly from skin ulcers of sea cucumber Holothuria poli (Delle Chiaje, 1823), a new candidate for aquaculture in the Mediterranean, were investigated. Morphological and biochemical tests, and molecular analysis methods were used to examine the dominant bacteria in the lesions of H. poli showing skin ulceration, peristome tumour and visceral ejection symptoms in rearing tanks. Present study is the first report for isolation and identification of Vibrio mediterranei (Pujalte and Garay 1986) (called also Vibrio shiloi Kushmaro et al. 2001) as a predominant gram-negative bacterium in the skin ulcers of H. poli. Reference data provided from the present study would lead to understand possible major pathogens causing skin ulceration syndrome and is crucial for the prophylaxis and treatment of such disease in holothuriculture.

A price index of farmed fish: The case of Turkish aquaculture market
(Taylor & Francis Inc, 2023) Tolon, Mustafa Tolga
This study analyzed the market price dynamics of farmed fish using a price index in Turkey. A specific Price Index incorporating the leading aquaculture species produced by Turkish aquaculture, has been calculated for a five-year period spanning from 2016 to 2020. The empirical analysis is based on 60-month price and quantity data of chosen aquaculture species traded in a major wholesale fish market. Calculated prize index clearly indicates the noticeable effects of unusual economic and market dynamics on farmed fish prices. The significant increase in prices of agricultural inputs including aquafeed, electricity, fuel, maintenance of materials, and maintenance of buildings, as well as the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, are the major factors influencing upward changes in price index. The Turkish Aquaculture Price Index is a practical tool that uses numerical expressions to reflect the periodic increase or decrease in the price of the aquaculture product commodity and makes significant contributions to understanding the price patterns and factors that have a cointegrated relation with the price changes in aquaculture market.

Reproductive cycle of the temperate sea cucumber Holothuria tubulosa in the northeastern Aegean Sea
(Wiley, 2024) Engin, Serhat; Tolon, Mustafa Tolga; Gunay, Deniz; Emiroglu, Dilek
Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the reproductive cycle and spawning frequency of the sea cucumber Holothuria tubulosa in the northeastern Aegean Sea. Methods: The study covered a period of 12 months, beginning in October 2018 and concluding in September 2019. During this period, sea cucumber samples were collected monthly. Macroscopic and histological examinations of gonadal tubules were conducted to provide credible information for fishery management and aquaculture. Result: The sex ratio of the sampled population was 1:1.3, with 95 males and 130 females. The drained body weights at 50% maturity were 70.90 g for females and 70.80 g for males. The total length at 50% maturity was estimated at 18.58 cm for females and 18.05 cm for males. Gonad maturation was initiated in March and progressed to spawning stages between July and August. From September to February, the gonads were in postspawning and recovery stages. A strong linear correlation was determined between the gonad index and the seawater temperature in the area. Conclusion: The information provided is expected to improve stock management, enforce fishery regulations, and support controlled breeding programs. These measures aim to preserve the natural populations of Holothuria tubulosa and guarantee the long-term viability of the species in the wild.

Sea cucumber (Holothuria tubulosa Gmelin, 1790) culture under marine fish net cages for potential use in integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA)
(Natl Inst Science Communication-Niscair, 2017) Tolon, Mustafa Tolga; Emiroglu, Dilek; Gunay, Deniz; Ozgul, Aytac
In this study, integrated aquaculture of Mediterranean sea cucumber species Holothuria tubulosa under finfish net cages was investigated. To evaluate whether H.tubulosa can be reared under net cage farms without additional feed and to compare growth performances, three underwater ranches (10x10m), just below a net cage (A), between the net cages (B) and 750 m away from the net cage systems (K) were set. Fifty sea cucumbers (92.81 +/- 2.29 g) were placed into each research station and growth performances like specific growth rate (SGR) and weight gain were observed for 90 days. SGR of sea cucumbers in stations A, B and K were 0.3 +/- 0.04, 0.22 +/- 0.02 and 0.10 +/- 0.01 %/d, respectively. The highest mean weight gain 31.11 +/- 0.84 g was recorded at station A where the lowest was in station K as 8.89 +/- 0.12 g. Organic carbon and organic material amount of research stations significantly affected the final mean weights of sea cucumbers where the highest growth was determined at the stations A and B. The results suggest that integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) systems combined with finfish and sea cucumber H. tubulosa under net cages would provide by-products to aquaculture farms without an extra feed costs in the Mediterranean Sea.
