The 2020 İzmir earthquake and its effect on COVID-19 cases
    (CSIRO, 2023) Durmaz, S.; Aslan, G.; Durusoy, R.; Çiçek, C.
On 30 October 2020, an earthquake measuring 6.9 moment magnitude occurred between Kusadasi and Samos, Türkiye, with a significant impact on buildings in the Bornova–Bayraklı district of İzmir. Immediately afterwards, a comprehensive study was commenced to investigate the relationship between the earthquake that occurred during the SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) pandemic and case numbers at the Ege University, Faculty of Medicine’s Hospital in Bornova, İzmir. This cross-sectional study was carried out based on the records of those admitted to the university hospital with suspicion of COVID-19 in the pre-earthquake and post-earthquake periods of the pandemic. The microbiology laboratory of the hospital used reverse transcription–polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) results as a dependent variable and compared with the time, age and gender as the independent variables, classified according to the timing of the earthquake. RT-PCR test results were positive in 11.60% of the whole study group; however, tests were 6.69% positive before the earthquake and increased to 23.42% afterwards (P < 0.001), which equated to an increase of 4.25 times (95% CI 4.04–4.47) when comparing pre- to post-earthquake RT-PCR positivity (P < 0.001). The positive COVID-19 RT-PCR detection rate among those aged 50 and over was greater by a factor of 1.15 (95% CI 1.06–1.23) compared to a younger age group (P < 0.001). There was no difference for the gender variable used in suspected case or contact tracing applications of COVID-19 PCR. However, when stratified by age and gender, in the female group, there was a 1.24-fold (95% CI 1.11–1.38) increase in the 50+ age group (26.2%) compared to the younger age group (22.2%) after the earthquake (P < 0.001). In the male group, the rate of laboratory diagnosis of COVID-19 before the earthquake was in the under-50 age group (7.6%) as compared to the >50 age group (5.2%; P < 0.001). © 2023 CSIRO. (Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI), 2023) Kayalı, G.A.; Durmaz, S.; Şahin, I.N.; Akkul, B.; Durusoy, R.; Akarca, F.K.; Ulukaya, S.
Aim: The objective of this study was to explore the potential correlation between COVID-19 infection or vaccination and levels of anti-nucleocapsid (anti-N) and anti-spike (anti-S) antibodies. Methods: Among 6050 healthcare workers at the Ege University Hospital, a cohort study with 162 participants divided into three arms with 54 participants each was conducted. The three groups were selected as follows: those diagnosed with COVID-19 and not vaccinated (group 1), those diagnosed with COVID-19 and subsequently vaccinated with CoronaVac (group 2), and those not diagnosed with COVID-19 but vaccinated with two doses of CoronaVac (group 3). Antibody levels measured at the sixth month of follow-up were defined as the primary outcome. Results: At the sixth month, all serum samples tested positive for anti-S. Anti-S levels were found to be significantly higher in group 2 than in the other groups (p < 0.001). There were no differences in antibody levels between groups 1 and 3 (p = 0.080). Average antibody levels were found to be lower in office workers and males. Anti-N antibodies were found to be positive in 85.1% of subjects at the sixth month. In group 2, anti-N antibodies were detected in all samples at the sixth month. Anti-N antibody levels were not significantly different between groups 1 and 2 (p = 0.165). Groups 1 and 2 had significantly higher antibody levels than group 3 (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Vaccination or infection provide protection for at least 6 months. Those who have previously been diagnosed with COVID-19 do not need to be vaccinated in the early period before their antibody levels decrease. © 2023 by the authors.

Efficacy and safety of bevacizumab plus capecitabine and irinotecan regimen for metastatic colorectal cancer
    (Humana Press Inc, 2010) Degirmenci, M.; Karaca, B.; Gorumlu, G.; Durusoy, R.; Piskin, G. Demir; Bozkurt, M. T.; Cirak, Y.; Tunali, D.; Karabulut, B.; Sanli, U. A.; Uslu, R.
Recent phase III trials have proven the fact that adding bevacizumab to irinotecan plus infusional 5-fluorouracil (5-FU)/leucovorin (LV) should be preferred as a first-line treatment for metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC). But, since the data regarding bevacizumab administered together with capecitabin, an oral fluoropyrimidine, and irinotecan in patients with mCRC is limited, we aimed to analyse the efficacy and safety of bevacizumab with capecitabine plus irinotecan (BEV-CAPIRI) regimen in mCRC patients. Records of patients treated with BEV-CAPIRI regimen between January 2005 and March 2008 were reviewed. Efficacy data regarding response rates (RR) as well as safety data were collected. Progression free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) analyses were done by using the Kaplan-Meier method. A total number of 53 metastatic colorectal cancer patients were treated with BEV-CAPIRI regimen. The median age of this population was 57.3 +/- 11.5 (range 29-78). The treatment was well tolerated. The RR was 43.3%, while 30.1% of the patients achieved stable disease (SD). Median PFS and OS were 12.6 +/- 1.4 and 20.6 +/- 1.7 months, respectively. However, median OS was 21.3 months for male and 14.6 months for female patients. In addition, median OS and PFS was 25.3 months and 16.2 months for the patients who received BEV-CAPIRI as first-line treatment, respectively, and for the other patients it was 15.2 months and 10.2 months, respectively. In conclusion, BEV-CAPIRI is an effective and well-tolerated alternative regimen for mCRC, leading to disease control in a vast majority of patients with mCRC.

Electromagnetic fields from mobile phones and their base stations: Health effects
    (Elsevier, 2019) Durusoy, R.; Hassoy, H.
Exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMF) has become a part of modern life. Among sources of EMF, people are becoming increasingly more exposed to radiofrequency waves from mobile phones and their base stations. The health effects of this EMF have become of concern and the number of related studies is on the rise. The aim of this article is to describe the effects of mobile phones and base stations on health covering an introduction to biological effects, with more emphasis of epidemiologic studies especially on some symptoms and cancer, and to discuss possible sources of bias in studies in this field. Some pathways through which mobile phone EMFs affect the functioning of the cells of the body have been identified, three of them known to be leading to carcinogenesis. Some effects on specific organs or on the functions of the body have been found in experimental or observational studies, both in animals and humans. There are nonspecific health symptoms associated with exposure to both mobile phones and their base stations, with the frequency of symptoms increasing with phone use or with decreasing distance to base stations, indicating dose-response. According to some case-control studies on cancers, an association has been found for glioma, acoustic neuroma, meningioma, parotid gland tumors, especially after 10 years of use and on the ipsilateral side of the head. There are some sources of bias which should be considered when interpreting the results of both experimental biological studies and case-control studies, the most important being funding bias. The precautionary principle should be applied until firmer conclusions are established. © 2019 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Nursing students' immunisation status and knowledge about viral hepatitis in Turkey: a multi-centre cross-sectional study
    (Wiley-Blackwell, 2011) Yamazhan, T.; Durusoy, R.; Tasbakan, M. I.; Tokem, Y.; Pullukcu, H.; Sipahi, O. R.; Ulusoy, S.
Background: The aims of this multi-centre cross-sectional survey were to detect Turkish nursing students' level of knowledge on viral hepatitis, to evaluate their rates of exposure to blood and to find out their hepatitis A (HAV), hepatitis B (HBV) vaccination status. Methods: This multi-centre cross-sectional study was conducted in 14 nursing schools located in the seven geographical regions of Turkey. A questionnaire composed of 47 questions on socio-demographic factors, level of knowledge on HAV, HBV, hepatitis C (HCV) immunisation status, exposure history and attitudes was applied to the study group. Results: A total of 1491 third- and fourth-year nursing students participated with an 89% response rate. The mean age of the participating students was 21.4 +/- 1.3. Their mean knowledge score was 23.7 +/- 4.6 (71/100) and was significantly higher in fourth-year students than third-year students. There were significant differences in mean scores among nursing schools. Among the participants, 85.3% had received HBV vaccine and 9.1% had received HAV vaccine. The percentage of students who signify themselves at increased risk of acquiring viral hepatitis was 97.3%. Of the students, 28.1% had sustained a needle-stick injury and 5.4% had experienced conjunctival exposure to blood. Conclusions: Curriculum differences among nursing schools have a significant effect on nursing students' level of knowledge. For this reason, nursing schools should organize HBV immunisation programmes for their students to increase vaccination coverage.

The prevalence of Sjogren's syndrome in adult women
    (Taylor & Francis As, 2006) Kabasakal, Y.; Kitapcioglu, G.; Turk, T.; Oder, G.; Durusoy, R.; Mete, N.; Egrilmez, S.; Akalin, T.
Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of primary Sjogren's syndrome (pSS) according to European criteria (1993) and to the US-European Consensus Group (US-EU) criteria (2002) in adult women in Bornova, Izmir, Turkey. Materials and method: The study was designed as a two-phase cross-sectional survey consisting of a baseline questionnaire and collection of blood samples and clinical examination. In the initial phase, positivity for autoantibodies Ro(SS-A), La(SS-B), rheumatoid factor (RF), and anti-nuclear antibodies (ANA) was determined, and in the clinical phase, clinical examination, salivary and ocular tests were performed. Minor salivary gland biopsy was performed for those who had at least three of these five criteria positive. Results: In our sample the prevalence of SS was 1.56% [95% confidence interval (CI) 0.92-2.66] according to the European criteria and 0.72% (95% CI 0.33-1.57) according to the US-EU criteria. Conclusion: To prevent the loss in diagnosis of pSS, the addition of ANA, RF, and tear break-up time (BUT) tests to US-EU criteria would be appropriate.

Screening for metastasis in primary breast cancer patients having four or more axillary lymph node involvement: is it really necessary?
    (Imprimatur Publications, 2010) Uslu, R.; Kapkac, M.; Karaca, B.; Camyar, H.; Durusoy, R.; Ozdemir, N.; Aras, A. B.; Oktay, A.; Ozkilic, H.; Yilmaz, R.
Purpose: To evaluate the necessity and direct cost effectiveness of screening and staging procedures in breast cancer patients having >= 4 positive axillary lymph nodes and to identity further possible biopathological risk factors associated with increased risk of metastasis. Methods: We reviewed the demographic and clinicopathological data from the medical records of 1897 newly diagnosed breast cancer patients. Patients having >= 4 positive axillary lymph nodes after primary surgery for breast cancer and who had staging examinations for metastasis were eligible. The impact of staging procedures (thoracoabdominal CT, bone scan etc.) for detecting metastasis, decision of adjuvant treatment and direct costs were analyzed in 329 patients with operable breast cancer Results: Thirty-five (10.6%) patients were found with metastasis at diagnosis. Seven (20.0%) among them had multiple metastases. Eighteen (51.4%) had lung, 17(48.6%) bone, and 7 (20.0%) liver metastasis. Twenty-one (60.0%) patients needed further radiological investigation for metastasis confirmation. Treatment decision was changed in 27 (77.1%) patients. No statistically significant risk factor was identified among the metastatic patients by means of conventional demographic and biopathological parameters. The cost of screening was lower when compared to the cost of treatment without any screening procedure. Conclusion: Since the conventional clinicopathological data seems not sufficient to define the risk of developing metastasis in breast cancer patients with >= 4 axillary lymph node involvement, all of them should undergo full staging examinations until new parameters based on genomic level are defined. Staging procedures need modification for high risk breast cancer patients.

What kinds of hand injuries are more likely to result in amputation? An analysis of 6549 hand injuries
    (Sage Publications Ltd, 2011) Durusoy, R.; Davas, A.; Kayalar, M.; Bal, E.; Aksu, F.; Ada, S.
We analysed 6549 hand injuries treated between 1992 and 2005 at a specialist hospital in Turkey to identify risk factors for amputations. There were 2899 (44%) hand amputations. Left-side injuries were more prone to amputation. The risk of amputation was higher in men, workers and those in the 15-24 and 45-54 year-old age groups. Compared to home, commercial areas were the places with highest risk, followed by farms and industrial/construction areas. The majority of amputations occurred in industrial/construction areas (87%). Among objects/substances producing injury, watercraft led to the highest risk of amputation and contact with machinery was the mechanism with highest risk. Press machines were the most frequent objects causing amputation both in men and women, followed almost equally by powered wood cutters in men. Doors were the most frequent objects of amputation in children, followed by powered wood cutters. Education, enforcement, and improved engineering are the keys to prevent amputations. Precluding illegal child labour is essential.
