Öğe Agronomic evaluation of some strawberry cultivars under high plastic tunnel in Menemen conditions(Int Soc Horticultural Science, 2020) Ergun, M.; Can, H. Z.; Ozer, K. B.; Cetinel, B.The study was carried out in organic farming certified parcels at Application and Research Farm of Ege University, Faculty of Agriculture. The strawberry cultivars, such as 'Ventana', 'Diamente', 'Sweet Charlie', 'Elsante', 'Camarosa', 'Caminoreal', 'Albion' and 'Aromas' have been cultivated according to organic farming principles and compared with the 'Rubygem' cultivar which has been successfully cultivated extensively in the region in terms of yield and quality characteristics. Yield per plant (g), fruit weight (g), fruit diameter (mm) and length (mm), fruit shape, ach en state and color, fruit interior filling, fruit hardness (kg) total soluble solids (%), titratable acidity (g 100 mL(-1)) and fruit color (L*, a* and b*) were investigated. According to the obtained results and cluster analysis, 'Camarosa' and 'Sweet Charlie' cultivars can be considered as suitable cultivars for the region in organic farming.Öğe Determination of Gas Exchange Capacity of Some Breba Fig Cultivars(Int Soc Horticultural Science, 2008) Can, H. Fig tree which is generally grown under marginal conditions is well adapted to drought and salinity in Turkey as in many countries. Furthermore, measuring gas exchange capacity of breba fig producing cultivars could provide information related to their adaptation to a certain agroecology or bring solutions to improve their lower yield levels. For this reason, a study was carried out to determine gas exchange capacity of some breba fruit producing parthenocarpic rig cultivars originating from Turkey, Israel and France.Öğe Effect of altitudes on physical and chemical properties of sun-dried fig (Ficus carica 'Sarilop') fruit(Int Soc Horticultural Science, 2021) Sen, F.; Aksoy, U.; Ozer, K. B.; Can, H. Z.; Konak, R.Turkish dried figs are produced in orchards located at different altitudes ranging from sea level to nearly 800 m above sea level (a.s.l.). From 1970s onward, fig plantations have moved toward higher altitudes due to various factors. This study aimed at determining the impact of altitude on some fruit physical and chemical properties. Fruit quality was monitored in four fig orchards at altitudes ranging between 46 and 759 m a.s.l. in Aydin province for two years. The results revealed that average fruit weight was the highest in the low-land orchard whereas the lowest at 501 m. The total soluble solid contents were higher at two lower altitudes. The skin L* color value was the highest at 759 m compared to those harvested from orchards at 46 m a.s.l. The ratio of fruit losing quality due to physiological disorders was significantly higher in the low-land orchard and were lower in orchards located at 228, 501 and 759 m a.s.l. The titratable acidity of the dried fruit obtained from low-land orchard had 33% higher and measured as 0.78 g citric acid 100 g(-1) dried weight. The altitude had no significant effect on fruit moisture content, water activity (a(w)) or firmness. Turkish sun-dried figs are known in the world trade for their large size and supreme quality. As the fig orchards move toward higher altitudes, average weight decreases however share of marketable fruit quality increases. Optimization of plant nutrition and soil fertility management may help to overcome reduction in fruit size at higher altitudes.Öğe Effect of yearly conditions on sugar composition of fresh, partially dried and sun-dried fig fruit(Int Soc Horticultural Science, 2021) Sen, F.; Aksoy, U.; Ozer, K. B.; Can, H. Z.Turkey is the world leader in fresh and dried fig trade. Fig possessing high dry matter and sugar content has been one of the major sun-dried fruit species in the Mediterranean region for millennia. Various factors as the cultivar, rootstock, ecological conditions, cultural practices, or harvest maturity may influence the sugar composition of the fruit. Deviations may also occur according to the prevailing yearly climatic conditions. This study is designed to assess the yearly variations in the sugar composition of 'Sarilop' fig fruit at fresh, partially dried and fully dried stages. Sugar composition was analyzed in fruits harvested from 10 fig orchards selected to represent the major production region in Aydin, Turkey. Major sugar fractions were fructose and glucose; sucrose was found only is some samples at low concentrations. In fresh fig fruit, glucose content showed variations according to the years (6.16-7.19 g 100 g(-1)) whereas fructose (mean 5.65 g 100 g(-1)) contents were found similar in all years. As the fruit water content decreased, the sugar concentration increased in partially and fully dried fruit. In partially dried fruit, the sugar concentrations were higher in the third year, mainly as fructose (15.37 g 100 g(-1)) and glucose (17.25 g 100 g(-1)). In dried figs, the yearly variations were very limited and the mean values for fructose, glucose and sucrose were determined as 17.60, 21.40 and 1.19 g 100 g(-1), respectively. Noticeable yearly variations occurred in glucose content of fresh, fructose, glucose and sucrose of partially dried, and sucrose content of dried fig ('Sarilop') fruit.Öğe Estimation of Leaf Area Index in Some Breba Fig Cultivars(International Society Horticultural Science, 2008) Can, H. Z.; Leitao, J; Neves, MADetermination of leaf area index which is a key factor in many physiological processes in plants plays a crucial role. Despite the difficulty of measurement, without a suitable instrument it is quite time consuming and destructive. The exact measurement of leaf area index requires the measurement of the total leaf area of the canopy. For this reason, this study aims at developing a measurement procedure to estimate the leaf area index in some breba rig cultivars. During the experiment a digital plant canopy analyzer was used to control measurements. Breba fig trees of 'Susak', 'Dumanli Kara', 'Horasan', 'Beyaz Orak', 'Siyah Orak', 'Yediveren', 'Siyah Cicek', 'Beyaz Cicek', 'Noire de Coromb' (France), 'Banana Fig' (France) and 'Nazareth' (Israel) were selected as the plant material. The nearest measured LAI values to estimated LAI values were obtained from the Northern west direction of the canopy in Nazareth. On the other hand, from the Southern east and Southern west directions in other evaluated breba crop rig cultivars.Öğe Expected Effects of Climate Change on Organic Agriculture in Turkey(Edizioni Dedalo S R L, 2012) Aksoy, U.; Can, H. Z.In Turkey organic agriculture started in mid-1980s with the demand coming from the enlarging European market. This impulse resulted in converting traditional Turkish crops as dried fruit and nuts that were already grown as low-input into organic management. These commodities still play a major role in Turkish organic production and export. Turkey being a Mediterranean country is reported to be severely affected by climate change in all scenarios. The impact will vary according to the regions. High temperatures and water shortages will be the major problems of the west, southwest and southeast. The east will have milder winter climates that will affect the snow melt and river flows. These effects will get stronger towards the second (2041-2070) and third (2071-2100) periods. Organic agriculture is practiced in all regions of Turkey mainly based upon the existing ecological and socio-economic factors. Changes in climate will affect perennials the most whether be cultivated fruit species or harvested from nature. The paper evaluates the expected effects of climate change on Turkish organic agriculture at regional level based upon common findings revealed by different scenarios.
