Özet
Despite advances in plastic surgery, there will always be a need for facial prostheses for the patients who exhibit facial defects. Facial prostheses are used to transform congenital, developmental, and acquired defects of the head and neck into natural-appearing reproductions of the missing parts, thus providing an acceptable appearance and improved function. Polydimethyl siloxane elastomers are the materials of choice in the modern maxillofacial prosthetics, with advantages such as flexibility, life-like appearance, good esthetics, ease of coloring, easy manipulation, thin margins and adhesive compatibility. Although widely used, they are far from ideal due to disadvantages such as instability and rapid degradation. Facial defects and their prosthetic rehabilitation by employing polydimethyl siloxane elastomers are discussed in this chapter according to the highlights of the related literature.
