Sunflower oil, cotton seed oil, soybean oil, sunflower oil soapstock, and tallow singly or in combination (1:1) with tallow were added to starter and finisher diets fed to 414 broiler chickens. Nine different isonitrogenic and isocaloric diets were prepared. Body weight differences were significant (P<0.01) at 35 days of age. Growth rate was significantly higher with soybean oil than with the other fat sources. Carcass characteristics of broilers were affected by dietary fats. Carcass yield and weights of carcass parts (leg and breast), abdominal fat, liver, gizzard and heart were affected by dietary fats (P<0.01). Total carcass lipids, dry matter, crude protein, and ash were not significantly affeected by dietary treatment, indicating that an array of fat sources and combinations can be used in poultry feed formulations (P>0.01). Fatty acid analyses of abdominal fat demostrated that the fatty acid composition of abdominal fat was influenced by the fatty acid composition of dietary fats, linolenic acid was not significantly affected (P<0.01). Total serum lipid content was also not significantly affected by dietary fat sources (P>0.01).en_US
