Özet

In the eighteenth century, the Ottoman Empire made some amendments to state institutions and social structure in order to reach the prosperity level of Europe and turned its face to development activities. During the peaceful period of Ahmed III's last twelve years, which was later called the Tulip Era, the Ottomans' trended towards the West to investigate the cause of failures led to a revival in many fields, ranging from architecture to literature. The Enlightenment movement, which progressed from the general public to the upper classes in Europe, was limited to the palace and its surroundings in the Ottoman Empire. The expenditures during the period left the people in a dire situation, inducing the period to end with a rebellion; however, the awakening movement, whose seeds were planted in this period, proceeded to flourish in the following centuries. In the Tulip Era, when scientists and artists were working actively, a systematic translation activity was carried out by the state for the first time, and it was aimed to benefit from the knowledge of the West while preserving the Islamic culture by translating works from both the East and the West. In this study, Esad of Ioannina, who attracted attention with his versatility throughout the period, shall be examined within the framework of his identity as a scientist and translator, as well as his indigeneous works, as one of the most productive translators of the period. It shall try to reveal the contribution of Esat Efendi to the Ottoman Enlightenment with his translations from the East and the West, just as Europe's turning to the science of antiquity during the Enlightenment period achieved through translation.
