Özet

Purpose: In this study, the aim is to determine the usage situations of farmers in utilizing information technologies, the factors restricting their usage, and the purposes for which they use existing mobile applications. Design/Methodology/Approach: A proportional sample size method was used in determining the sample size. In the districts of Menemen and Torbalı in the province of Izmir, data was collected through face-to-face interviews with 134 farmers using a questionnaire. Basic descriptive statistical analysis, absolute and relative distributions, cross-tabulations, and statistical comparison methods (non-parametric tests such as Mann-Whitney U Test and Kruskal-Wallis Test) were used for data analysis. Findings: As a result of the study, it was determined that farmers generally have a good level of ownership and use of smartphones, internet access, and television tools. However, their ownership and usage levels are low for computers, tablets, radios, and email. The high prices of devices and electricity, along with weak internet coverage, were identified as the most significant factors hindering access to Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). The study found that the willingness to use ICT is hampered by the annoyance of advertisements, lack of trust in online information, and concerns about data security. Additionally, it was observed that farmers show very low usage of the Digital Agricultural Market (DİTAP) application. The reluctance to prefer digital marketing channels was attributed to the farmers' lack of trust in online shopping and sales, as well as concerns about data security and insufficient knowledge/experience. Younger age, lower agricultural experience, higher education level, and larger farm size were identified as factors contributing to higher ICT usage frequency compared to other farmers. Therefore, it was concluded that farmers' use of ICT is not at a sufficient level and needs improvement. Originality: This study, which has obtained findings regarding the usage of information technologies by farmers in İzmir province, known for its high agricultural potential, the factors limiting their effective use, and the purposes for which these technologies are currently utilized, is highly important for promoting digital transformation in the agricultural sector with the aim of enhancing farmers' productivity in agricultural production. © 2024, Turkish Journal of Agricultural Economics.
