dc.description.abstractWe studied staining features of vascular structures and spindle cells in various forms and stages of Kaposi's sarcoma using two endothelial markers. Serial sections of 48 excisional and/or biopsy material belonging to 35 cases of Kaposi's sarcoma were stained for factor VIII-related antigen (FVIIIRA) and Ulex europaeus agglutinin I (UEA-I) using immunoperoxydase method and also with conventional histochemical stains. Classical Kaposi's sarcoma characterized by multinodular lesions located in extremities was found in 28 cases. Three cases were lymphadenopathic form and two cases were immunodeficiency-related Kaposi's sarcoma (one being renal transplant receiver and the other had myelodysplastic syndrome). Two patients had solitary lesions in head and neck region. Vascular structures seen in various stages were categorized as 'dilated veins', 'dilated lymphatics', 'vessels with endothelial and pericytic proliferation', and 'capillaries of embryonic type'. All vascular structures were stained with UEA-I while FVIIIRA stained all vascular structures except dilated lymphatics. Spindle cells exhibited no staining at all. It was concluded that with these staining features, Kaposi's sarcoma could not be said to be lymphatic in origin but rather vascular structures it has represented stages of differentiation corresponding to embryologic development, and spindle cells showed no sign of differentiation toward endothelium.en_US
