General situation report about the higher education institutes providing nursing education in Turkey

Objective of this study is to determine current situation of the higher education institutes providing nursing education in Turkey. In this context, the higher education institutes providing nursing education in Turkey were scrutinized and their status were determined by considering sub-dimensions such as structure, managerial and teaching staff and education and developmental status. Research data were collected between July and August 2016 from the official internet pages of the institutes providing nursing education in higher education; from Council of Higher Education electronic database; and from the guides of Student Selection and Placement Center. As of August 2016, 114 institutes provide nursing education in higher education in Turkey. Of these institutes, 28 are foundation universities, 86 are state universities, 60 are faculties and 54 are higher schools. In these institutes, there are a total of 2188 lecturers and instructors and 54,441 nursing students. There are 69 institutes proving graduate study and 35 providing doctorate education. In these institutes general situation was determined through examining certain features such as the professions and titles of these management and education personnel; the number of instructors carrying out the teaching; regions that institutes are located; education system, setting up the department; post-graduate and doctorate education, institutes' status of issuing journal; providing foreign language education and accreditation. As a result of study following findings were obtained; in institutes providing nursing education in higher education, the number of instructors were insufficient compared to the number of students; there was only one instructor per approximately 41 students, and 13.9% of the managers of the institutes (34%) providing nursing education were from nursing profession while only 29.6% of the managers of all institutes were from nursery profession. When the schools are investigated separately, it has been concluded that there are great differences among them in terms of almost all aspects.
