| dc.description.abstract | Thiazide diuretics not only decrease blood pressure,but distinguish themselves by potentiating most other drugs. Despite proven effectiveness their use is on the decline all over the world. According to the author, this is unjustified and mainly due to their cheapness. Producers therefore try to have them replaced by more expensive new drugs. Many investigators also supported this development by disproportional emphasis on their supposed disadvantages and unproven hypotheses. Although authoritative committees have recently again advised diuretics as first-line antihypertensive treatment, it is doubtful whether scientific arguments will prevail over commercial pressure. | en_US |
