Fruits are a part of biodiversity associated with socio-economic development of Kashmiris. Kashmir is pioneer in growing fruits for being endowed with natural advantages of topography and climate. The germplasm of fruit crops in the region holds an important potential for the development of new varieties. The fruits considered here include Apple varieties such as Red Delicious, Gala Must, Golden Delicious, Vance Delicious, Oregon Spur, Royal Delicious, Red Gold, Red Chief, Mollie’s Delicious, Lal Ambri and Ambri; Pear varieties such as William Bartlett, Clapp’s Favourite, Flemish Beauty, Fertility, Starkrimson and Chinese Sand pear; Peach varieties: July Elberta, Saharanpuri, Quetta and Peshawari; Plum varieties: Santa Rosa, Mariposa, Burbank, Satsuma and Wickson; Cherry; Apricot varieties: Kaisha, Charmagz, Harcot, New Castle and Gilgati Sweet; Walnut varieties: Hamdan, Sulaiman, CITH walnut-1, CITH Walnut-2, CITH Walnut-3, CITH Walnut-4, CITH Walnut-5 and Lake English; Almond varieties: Shalimar, Makhdoom, Waris, Parbat, Pranyaj, IXL, and Non Pareil; Chestnut and Quince. Several problems are faced by the fruit industry in Kashmir. There is great need to diversify the fruit crops with varieties through planned area expansion in order to make the availability of diverse fruits and varieties with longer duration of the year. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2022.en_US
