Growth curves for average body weights of broilers were compared with growth curves for individuals using three models: Bertalanffy, Gompertz, and Logistic. A total of 141 males and females from two commercial lines were studied: 24 females and 32 males from line 1, and 64 females and 21 males from Line 2. individual body weights were recorded weekly, from hatching through 6 weeks of age. Coefficients of determination, residual standard errors and Durbin-Watson statistics were used to determine goodness of fit. Log-Logistic gave the best fit of the three growth models. When fitting the Log-Logistic, the residual standard error, Durbin Watson statistics and estimates of the parameter for mature weight were generally higher for curves of individual weights than for curves of average weights. Estimates for age at the inflection point were the same for average of individual weights and average weights. Average growth curves can be useful to demonstrate the growth model and to make general interpretations, but individual growth curves are necessary to examine individual differences.en_US
