Comparative analysis of an urban area (Turkey) from past to present in the context of transformation in transportation

In this study Karsiyaka above tunnel recreation area, which came into existence by transformation of the historical railway to a pedestrian oriented public space, is evaluated in terms of transformation in transportation. The four major objectives of the study are: to discuss the impacts of the transformation, to accomplish physical and sensorial analysis from the users point of view, to question performance of the transformed space and the necessity of transformation. Within the scope of the research method: firstly, the research area is described in general, and the transformation history from past to present and the current status of the space were put forward. Then, data collection studies were carried out in two steps as visual analysis of the study area and questionnaire survey with the users. As a result of the study it was found that the transformation decision given for the area is a correct choice, but the implementation of transformation is not successful enough. Although the place is generally found successful as an example of renewal, it has some deficiencies and insufficiencies primarily in urban design principals and in maintenance and management services. © 2019, Scibulcom Ltd..
