Özet

The degradation of organic pollutants in opium alkaloid factory wastewater was carried out by both a single aerobic biological degradation and anaerobic digestion. Pollutant load was evaluated by measuring the dissolved oxygen demand (DOC). The organic matter eliminated varied from 39% during anaerobic digestion to 75% during aerobic biological degradation. In both processes, the kinetic study was performed using the Monod model applied to the experimental data. A comparison of the results with data obtained from WAO (wet air oxidation) pretreatment of the same wastewater was also made. The implications for complete removal of organic pollutants by aerobic biological degradation followed by a chemical oxidation (WAO, ozonation, UV irradiation, etc.) step were also discussed.
