Özet
The share of agriculture in Turkish GNP and exports has decreased over the last two decades. However, agriculture still plays an important role in Turkish economy since it provides employment opportunities and supports industry by producing raw materials. Fig is an important subsector of the Turkish agricultural economy. Turkey is ranked first in the world's fig production with approximately 10 million fig trees on cultivated fig area. The value of fig exports sum up to 80 million. In spite of the importance of the fig subsector in Turkish economy, the studies that aim to analyze the subsidy and marketing policies related to fig are small in number. In this study, we will examine subsidy policies in fig production by investigating the effects of subsidies on fig production, producer incomes, price formation, production costs, quality and storage. We will also attempt to assess the performance of the marketing of figs. Performance will be evaluated by using several performance criteria such as matching of supply and demand, stability of incomes, marketing margins and progressiveness.
