Özet
The conservation of species largely depends on its ability to survive and reproduce in their habitats. Carnivores and mesocarnivores, in particular, (medium-sized carnivores) have a key role in ecosystems because of their positions in the food chain. In this paper, a habitat model for red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) was developed based on the ecology of the Cesme-Urla Peninsula. Using the model, the carrying capacity and viability of red fox populations were determined. The results revealed that 72% of the study region was optimal habitat for the red fox population. The peninsula was capable of sustaining as many as 5 minimum viable and 9 small populations. It became apparent that the study area sustained highly viable populations of red foxes.
