Öğe Urban vegetation of the Anatolian side of Istanbul(Gebruder Borntraeger, 2020) Altay, Volkan; Silc, Urban; Yarci, Celal; Kavgaci, Ali; Carni, Andraz; Ozturk, MunirAims: We present the first survey of plant communities of Istanbul, their classification and syntaxonomy with main environmental drivers that shape them. Study area: Anatolian (Asian) part of Istanbul, Turkey. Methods: We collected 442 vegetation releves according to Braun-Blanquet method. Cluster analysis and ordination of the dataset were performed to assess particular vegetation patterns. Diagnostic species of each cluster were determined using the fidelity measure (phi-coefficient). Site conditions were presented by ecological indicator values. Results: the analysed dataset shows clear division into six classes. They represent typical weed plant community (Digitario sanguinalis-Eragrostietea minoris), annual (Sisymbrietea, Chenopodietea) and perennial ruderal vegetation (Artemisietea vulgaris, Epilobietea angustifolii), and higher successional stadia (Charabdido-Asphodeletea). Conclusions: Our survey of urban vegetation of Istanbul is the first attempt of urban vegetation classification in Turkey. We showed high diversity of vegetation due to various human impacts and Istanbul's location on the crossroads of different phytogeographical regions.Öğe Use of Aesculus hippocastanum L. as a biomonitor of heavy metal pollution(Pakistan Botanical Soc, 2006) Yilmaz, Ruya; Sakcali, Serdal; Yarci, Celal; Aksoy, Ahmet; Ozturk, MunirAesculus hippocastanum was studied as a possible biomonitor of the heavy metal pollution in the region of Thrace situated in the European part of Turkey. The urban roadside, city centre, and suburban sites were investigated. The Pb, Cd, Zn and Cu concentrations varied between 0.0200.051; 0.001-0.002 0.391-0.594; 0.256-0.38-7 g g(-1) dry weight in the washed leaves, between 0.023-0.119 0.002-0.068; 0.374-0.532 0.322-0.466 mu g g(-1) dry weight in the unwashed leaves, between 0.063-0.628; 0.005- 0.006-, 0.406-0.660; 0.345-1.026 Ag g(-1) dry weight in the bark respectively. In the soils supporting these plants the values of Pb, Cd, Zn and Cu varied between 0.812-6.745; 0.002-0.006; 2.196-4.598; 0.517-1.117 mu gg(-1) dry weight respectively. When we compare the concentrations of the heavy metals in the leaves, bark and soils, we can see that the values in the urban roadside are higher than other sites. According to these results concentration of C C:1 heavy metals in A. hippocastanum did not exceed the upper limit. A highly linear regression was obtained for Pb, Zn and Cu between concentrations of the element in surface soil and in the washed leaves of plant but the correlation in the case of Cd was insignificant.Öğe Water pollution studies in the rivers of the Edirne Region-Turkey(Taylor & Francis Inc, 2009) Sakcali, M. Serdal; Yilmaz, Ruya; Gucel, Salih; Yarci, Celal; Ozturk, MunirPhysico-chemical parameters of Tunca, Merich, Arda and Ergene rivers, in the Edirne region of Turkey, were investigated. Studies were carried out during 1998-2004 and the data obtained were compared with EU threshold levels. The results showed that the total concentrations of P, Pb, Cu, Ni, Mn and Co were higher than these threshold levels. There is an urgent need for Turkey to limit water pollution from a wide range of dangerous substances, particularly at a time when it is being considered as an EU candidate. Turkey will be required to achieve a satisfactory status in its waters by 2015, in particular in the waters of the rivers investigated in this paper that border Bulgaria and Greece. Levels of pollutants which pose a significant risk to the aquatic environment need to be monitored and strictly controlled.
