(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2023) Toraman, Aynur Uysal; Ozsoy, Suheyla Altug; Erkin, Ozum; Sert, Zuhal Emlek; Topcu, Sevcan; Ates, Esin
The use of standardized patients in nursing education provides many advantages such as providing students with realistic learning opportunities, defining patient needs, reducing anxiety, and stress while caring for real patients in clinical practice, and increasing clinical performance, theoretical knowledge, and self-confidence. This study aimed to examine the effect of repeated standardized patient simulations in family planning counseling on the anxiety levels, communication, and counseling skills of nursing students. This is a quasi-experimental study with single group pretest-posttest. The study sample consisted of 44 nursing students. Student sociodemographic form, State anxiety inventory, Communication skills inventory, and Family planning counseling skill learning guides were used as data collection tools. The median of the State anxiety inventory before the first standard patient simulation was 43.0, and the median of the State anxiety inventory before the repeated simulation was 38.5. A significant difference was found between after the first standard patient simulation and repeated simulations to students' median scores of State anxiety inventory, Communication skills inventory, and Family planning counseling skills (p < 0.05). Repeated simulations with standardized patients has contributed positively to reducing anxiety among students and increasing students' family planning counseling and communication skills.

Evaluation of stress, bio-psycho-social response and coping strategies during the practical training in nursing students: a cross sectional study
(Bmc, 2024) Solak, Mujgan; Topcu, Sevcan; Sert, Zuhal Emlek; Dogan, Sati; Savan, Fatma
BackgroundThe aim of the study was to identify stress level, bio-psycho-social response and coping behavior of nursing students during the practical training.MethodsA cross-sectional study was carried out with the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th-year nursing students (n = 1181) between September 2018-may 2019. Data was collected using by Socio-Demographic Questionnaire, The Student Nurse Stress Index, The Bio-Psycho-Social Response Scale and Coping Behavior Inventory.ResultsThe fourth-grade nursing students' stress level was found to be statistically significantly higher than of other graders. Nursing students have shown emotional symptoms and social-behavioral symptoms the most. To cope with stress, nursing students used the strategies transference, staying optimistic, problem-solving and avoidance, respectively.ConclusionsThese findings highlight the need to routinely evaluate nursing students for stress, bio-psycho-social response, and coping strategies during practical training. Thus, counseling units can be constituted by the nursing schools, and nursing students who have higher stress levels and inadequate coping strategies benefit from these units.

(Ios Press, 2024) Topcu, Sevcan; Sert, Zuhal Emlek
BACKGROUND: Improving acceptance of the COVID-19 vaccine among nursing students is an important strategy for both preventing infection and building public confidence in the vaccine. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to describe the views of intern nursing students on the COVID-19 vaccine and to evaluate their experiences in the COVID-19 vaccination unit. METHODS: This was a phenomenological qualitative study with a descriptive design. The 46 intern nursing students included in this study were all trained in the COVID-19 vaccination unit. The data was collected at focus group interviews conducted during June 2021 and October 2021. RESULTS: The mean age of intern nursing students was 22.78 +/- 0.91. From the focus group interviews, two themes were identified regarding the views of intern nursing students on the COVID-19 vaccine and their experiences in the COVID-19 vaccination unit: Theme 1. Positive views; Theme 2. Negative views. Intern nursing students described that they trust the COVID-19 vaccine and believe in its protection. Intern nursing students who performed their clinical practices in COVID-19 vaccination unit stated that they realized their responsibilities toward patients and the community. CONCLUSIONS: From the INSs' point of view, confidence in the vaccine, responsibility towards patients, their families and the community, and VU practice experience, the health risk associated with COVID-19 positively affected their decision to be vaccinated against COVID-19. The participation of intern nursing students in clinical practice during the pandemic influenced both intern nursing students and population in terms of the uptake of COVID-19 vaccines.

The Perception of Obese Persons Cross Cultural Considerations
(Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2015) Oksel, Esra; Gunduzoglu, Nazmiye Ciray; Topcu, Sevcan
The aim of this study was to evaluate the perception of obesity in adults. The study sample included 586 participants (body mass index >= 30 kg/m(2) and age >= 18 years). A questionnaire consisting of 22 questions was developed by the researchers in accordance with the literature. A statistically significant difference was found between the description and perception of weight as a threat to health (chi(2) = 57.65; P = .001). The perception of a threat to health was significantly higher in the group that described itself as overweight than other groups, and the group that described itself as having a normal weight had a significantly lower perception of a threat to health than other groups. The most important result of this investigation was that obesity was described by people but there was no awareness of the disease. It is suggested that future studies would increase people's awareness of obesity management.

Risk perception of cardiovascular disease among Turkish adults: a cross-sectional study
(Cambridge Univ Press, 2023) Topcu, Sevcan; Ardahan, Melek
Aim:The aim of the study was to determine in adults the risk perception for cardiovascular disease (CVD) and the associated factors. Background:CVDs are the leading cause of death globally. In adults, perceptions related to the risk for CVDs have a considerable effect on decision-making processes related to one's own health. Methods:A cross-sectional study was conducted with 453 adult people from April to June 2019 in Izmir, Turkey. Data were collected with a sociodemographic characteristics questionnaire, perception of risk of heart disease scale (PRHDS), and health perception. Findings:The mean PRHDS score of adults was 48.88 +/- 8.12. The risk perception for CVD was influenced by variables that were age, gender, education, marital status, employment status, health perception, familial cardiovascular disease history, chronic disease status, smoking status, and body mass index. Although CVDs are the most prominent cause of disease-related death in the world, risk perception for CVD was found to be low among the individuals included in this study. This finding indicates the importance of informing individuals about CVD risk factors, raising awareness, and training.
