    Climatic and geographic variation as a driver of phenotypic divergence in reproductive characters and body sizes of invasive Gambusia holbrooki

    Understanding the invasion success of alien species includes developing knowledge on how the biological traits of their populations respond to spatial differences in environmental conditions. For invasive fishes, while the influence of latitudinal and climatic gradients on their biological traits over large spatial scales is well established, there is less certainty in how these vary over smaller scales. Here, we tested the influence of a climatic and geographic gradient on the reproductive traits and body sizes of the invasive mosquitofish Gambusia holbrooki across five climatic regions in Turkey. The results revealed that the environmental conditions across eight sites provided two gradients: a latitudinal gradient (where northern sites were cooler with less rainfall) and a coastal-inland gradient (where changes were apparent from coastal areas and into inland areas). These gradients had marked effects on the traits of both sexes. In sites in coastal and southern areas, males had significantly larger gonopodia and females had greater fecundity than in inland and warmer areas, and with both sexes having body sizes that were smaller. The spatial differences in the male traits were suggested as being driven by differences in selection pressures at the sites that related to differences in their population abundances. The results revealed that environmental conditions across a relatively small spatial scale had some strong influences on the expression of specific biological traits of these mosquitofish populations, but with further work needed to test how these influences affect their invasion success.

    DISTRIBUTION OF CHIRONOMIDAE (DIPTERA-INSECTA) OF HIGH-ALTITUDE LAKES IN THE EASTERN BLACK SEA REGION OF TURKEY

    Six samplings were carried out during July and August 2005-2007 in order to determine the Chironomidae fauna of high-altitude lakes at the Eastern Black Sea region. All the investigated lakes are located at altitudes between 2530 and 3370 m a.s.l, except Uzungol (1100 m). Hereby, some measured environmental factors accompanied with Chironomidae fauna of 59 lakes are presented for the first time. As a result of the study, a total of 35 identified chironomid represent new records for the region.

    Exploring invasiveness and versatility of used microhabitats of the globally invasive Gambusia holbrooki

    Non-native species can lead to severe impacts on invaded ecosystems, including the decline of ecosystem function through deleterious impacts on species diversity. The successful establishment of non-native species in new environments is the first barrier a species must overcome, ultimately depending on its ability to either cope with or adapt to local site-specific conditions. Despite the widespread distribution and ecological consequences of many freshwater invaders, site-specific and climatic preferences are often unknown. This is also the case of the Eastern mosquitofish Gambusia holbrooki, a global invader considered as a pervasive threat to endemic species. Here, we determined the ecological features and preferred site-specific conditions of G. holbrooki in T & uuml;rkiye, which spans a wide range of diverse biogeographically distinct ecosystems by surveying populations from 130 localities in 2016 and 2017. Gambusia holbrooki were detected by hand-net in 48 of these sites (19 lotic, 29 lentic). It showed a preference for shallow waters with medium sized rocks, and abundances differed spatially across a latitudinal gradient and was influenced predominantly by variations in pH. The only other factors predicting its presence were low current velocities and gravel substrate, highlighting its ecological versatility in utilising a wide range of microhabitats. Bioclimatic models suggest that G. holbrooki is found in areas with a wide average annual temperature ranging from 10 to 20 degrees C, but with temperature not being a limiting factor to its invasion. Gambusia holbrooki shows a preference for xeric freshwater ecosystems and endorheic basins, as well as temperate coastal rivers, temperate upland rivers, temperate floodplain rivers and wetlands, and tropical and subtropical coastal rivers. These results, particularly the wide occurrence with only few limiting factors, emphasise the invasion potential of mosquitofish and should substantiate the need for localised invasive species management and conservation efforts, particularly in smaller or insular areas where mosquitofish and endemic fish species co-exist.

    Fish fauna of Bakircay Stream (North Eagean, Turkey)

    This study was carried out to determine the current fish fauna of Bakirgay River in seasonal periods between 2017 and 2018. Sampling was carried out in 15 different locations, 11 lotic and 4 lentic location from the small streams of source of the river to the downstream region. The sampling was performed with "Samus 725 G" model electroshock in lotic habitats; with standard fishing-nets which was "TS EN 14757 VVater Quality" in lentic habitats. As a result of he study, the presence of 17 taxa from 7 families including Anguillidae, Atherinidae, Cobitidae, Cyprinidae, Nernacheilidae, Poecilidae and Goblidae were determined. Mugilidae family members and Sataria paw species, which were previously reported vvithin the stream, were not obtained in our study. However, he presence of 6 species, namely Atherina boyeri, Cyprinus carpio, Carassius gibelio, Oxynemachellus teophili, Gambusia holbrooki and Knipowitschla caucasica species were found in this study for the first time. Cyprinidae family with 11 taxa was the biggest family in terms of species diversity in the rive: basin. Anguillidae, Athennidae, Cobibdae, Nemacheilidae, Poecilidae and Gobitlae families are represented by one taxon. in order to protect the rivers biodiversity and to 'maintain fishing activities effectively, the pollution sources should be overcomed firstly. in order to protect the biodiversity of the river and to maintain fishing activities effectively, first of all, pollution sources and exotic fish species that may have negative effects on the natural fish fauna of the basin should be bring under control. in addition, it will also be useful to organize events to inform local government and community about the importance and protection of aquatic environments.

    Fish fauna of Yildiz Mountains (North-Eastern Thrace, Turkey)

    In this study, it was aimed to determine the fish fauna of inland waters that are located in the Thrace region of Turkey and affected by the Black Sea and European fauna. the field surveys were carried out in 40 different locations in lotic and lentic biotopes located in the east of the Yildiz Mountains, between the Yalikoy in the south and the Rezve Stream in the north. Fish sampling was performed by using DC Electroshocker, gillnet, trammel-net, seine-net and fyke-net in April-September 2000, May-July 2001 and July 2009. A total of 33 taxa belonging to 14 families was identified; Acheilognathidae, Atherinidae, Centrarchidae, Clupeidae, Cobitidae, Cyprinidae, Gasterosteidae, Gobiidae, Gobionidae, Leuciscidae, Mugilidae, Poecilidae, Salmonidae and Syngnathidae. in the study area, Leuciscidae has the highest species richness with 10 taxa, while Acheilognathidae, Atherinidae, Centrarchidae, Clupeidae, Cobitidae, Gasterosteidae, Gobionidae, Poecilidae and Syngnathidae families are represented by a single species. the most common found fish species are Barbus tauricus, Gobio kovatschevi, Alburnus istanbulensis and Petroleuciscus borysthenicus. in terms of numbers of specimens, Gambusia holbrooki was followed by Phoxinus strandjae, Alburnoides tzanevi, Barbus tauricus and Alburnus istanbulensis.

    Gillnet and trammel net selectivity for Prussian carp (Carassius gibelio) in Marmara Lake, (Turkey)

    This study aimed to determine the selectivity properties of multifilament gillnets and trammel nets for Prussian carp (Carassius gibelio Bloch, 1782) in Marmara Lake (Manisa, Turkey). A total of 36 fishing trials were performed with three different stations on a monthly in 2012. Nets with same mesh sizes (4, 6, 8 and 10 cm) and characters were used in gillnets and trammel nets. SELECT method was utilized to estimate the selectivity parameters. Normal scale and normal location model gave the best fit for gillnet and trammel nets respectively. A total of 2234 Carassius gibelio were caught ranges between 8.80-27.50 cm in total lengths. The model length for 4 cm mesh size was estimated as 12.24 cm for gillnets and 12.63 cm for trammel nets. No statistical differences were found between estimated model lengths for different sex groups. Model lengths are much higher than first maturity size which 11.5 cm was given by different authors. This situation makes it impossible combating with this invasive species. Therefore, special fishing equipment or devices are needs to be investigated just for caught C. gibelio. In addition, C. gibelio was the second species by production rate in Turkey inland fisheries; therefore, it should be economically evaluated using different processing techniques.

    Is Gambusia holbrooki Known as an Invasive Fish Species in Kucuk Menderes River Basin Lakes (Turkey)?

    The aim of this study was to investigate the level of awareness of the species Gambusia holbrooki Girard, 1859, in the Kucuk Menderes River Basin lakes, a species which is considered to be a threat, particularly to the persistence of endemic species. Interviews regarding the species in the basin were conducted with a total of 104 people between 2016 and 2017. Data were collected from fish-ermen (n=52) and local people (n=52) who had an association with the Belevi, Barutcu, Gebekirse, Kocagoz and Kazan lakes in the Selcuk district, and the method used was that of face-to-face questionnaires. The questionnaire included questions about the recognition of the species and the harm that this species might cause. Furthermore, some demographic characteristics (e.g. age, marital status and education level) of participants were included in the present study.

    The remarkable observation for a mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) food from estuarine/coastal area (Izmir/Turkey): A mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrooki)

    The purpose of this study is to create awareness about the species of mosquito fishes (Gambusia holbrooki Girard, 1859) both vectors and ways of introduction to new aquatic habitats. Because the species creates risks, especially for the circumstance of the native and endemic fish fauna, studies about introduction stories of the species are quite important to prevent the risk. In the current report, mosquitofishes which are known as a highly invasive species were found in the crop content of a hen mallard duck (Anas platyrhynchos L., 1758) in an estuarine area, the Gediz River Basin (Izmir, Turkey). This report is the first record of a duck consuming mosquitofish. Although nevertheless, it is known that mallard duck feeding behaviour does not predominantly contain fish (they mainly feed on plant seeds), according to this observation, mosquitofish might be added to the prey list of mallards as a new type of food. Therewith, this feeding behavior also indicates that ducks might be a potential vector for the transport of invasive mosquitofishes.
