Öğe The Association between Perceived Social Support and Self-Efficacy of Turkish Elementary School Children(Fac Teacher Education, 2015) Ozsaker, Murat; Yardimc, Figen; Gerceker, Gulcin Ozalp; Muslu, Gonca KarayagizPositive power is very important for adolescents' physical and mental health. The sample for the study was composed of a total of 760 students in the 6th, 7th and 8th grades from 7 elementary schools. The sociodemographic data form, the "Child-Adolescent Social Support Scale" (CASSS) for measuring the social support perceived and the "Middle School Self-efficacy Scale" for measuring self-efficacy were used. This study was conducted to examine the relationship between the social support perceived and elementary school students' self-efficacy and the variables that influence perceived social support and self-efficacy. A positive relationship was determined between the CASSS and point averages on the sub-scales, the Middle School Self-efficacy Scale and the sub-scales of the students (p<0.001). It was established that the perceived social support in adolescents has affected their self-efficacy skills. It is recommended that professionals dealing with adolescent health should guide the adolescents by using social support and health self-efficacy on gaining skills for health protection, promotion and to take over the responsibility of their own health.Öğe Children's postoperative symptoms at home through nurse-led telephone counseling and its effects on parents' anxiety: A randomized controlled trial(Wiley, 2016) Gerceker, Gulcin Ozalp; Muslu, Gonca Karayagiz; Yardimci, FigenPurposeThe objective of this study was to evaluate children's postoperative symptoms at home after outpatient surgery through nurse-led telephone counseling and the effects of the nurse-led telephone counseling on parents' state-trait anxiety scores. Design and MethodsIn this prospective randomized controlled study, nurse-led telephone counseling was provided every day to parents in the intervention group until they came for the follow-up visit. Parents of children (n = 54) ages 3-17 years who had undergone outpatient surgery for appendicitis, cholecystectomy, or ovarian cysts were eligible to participate in the study. On the first postoperative day and at the follow-up visit, the Spielberger State-Trait-Anxiety Inventory (STAI) was administered to parents who were randomly allocated to the intervention (n = 24) and control groups (n = 30). ResultsThe parents reported on postoperative symptoms such as pain, activity levels, excretion, sleep, nutrition, and wound infection. While there was no difference in STAI scores for parents between the groups at the first postoperative day, there was a significant decrease in STAI scores in the intervention group versus the control group, with parents in the intervention group reporting lower anxiety scores. Practice ImplicationsOur results suggest that nurse-led telephone counseling is effective at reducing anxiety in parents of children after outpatient surgery.Öğe Evaluating the cancer related fatigue by children, mothers, and nurses in Turkish pediatric oncology patients(Elsevier Sci Ltd, 2016) Yilmaz, Hatice Bal; Gerceker, Gulcin Ozalp; Muslu, Gonca KarayagizPurpose: The aims of this study were to evaluate cancer related fatigue by children', mothers', and nurses' perspectives in recently diagnosed pediatric oncology patients, to evaluate levels of agreement between the fatigue scales, and to evaluate the relationships between fatigue and sample characteristics. Method: The sample of this cohort, descriptive, correlational study consisted of 26 recently cancer diagnosed children between the ages of 7 and 12, receiving inpatient treatment in pediatric oncology/hematology units, their mothers and their nurses. The data about children's fatigue were collected using the Child Fatigue Scale-24 h, Parent Fatigue Scale-24 h and Staff Fatigue Scale-24 h, for two consecutive days in the second and third weeks of the patient's first chemotherapy treatment cycle. Results: The mean scores of the Child Fatigue Scale-24 h showed the children's fatigue to be at a moderate level, a statistically significant difference was found between the CFS-24 h and PFS-24 h mean scores in the first and second measurement (p < 0.05). The Intraclass correlation showed a good agreement between scales and repeated measurements for these scales. Conclusion: Fatigue in recently diagnosed cancer patients is an important symptom which is of particular concern to the children, their parents and nurses. The study showed that these three scales can be used alone an also used simultaneously, and also proved that these scales are reliable for repeated measurements. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. This problem has grown considerably in recent years; the exact mechanisms underlying fatigue remain unclear. Therefore, assessing and managing this symptom can be problematic. This article describes the findings from a survey evaluating how health professionals (n = 56) at the Pediatric Oncology Centers in Izmir currently define and assess cancer-related fatigue. The results demonstrate that while the problems associated with fatigue are acknowledged, assessment tools are not widely used, and the majority of health professionals report that they would benefit from further education on the subject to assist in the care of patients.Öğe A study of the relationship between the study process, motivation resources, and motivation problems of nursing students in different educational systems(Churchill Livingstone, 2017) Yardimci, Figen; Bektas, Murat; Ozkutuk, Nilay; Muslu, Gonca Karayagiz; Gerceker, Gulcin Ozalp; Basbakkal, ZumrutBackground: The study process is related to students' learning approaches and styles. Motivation resources and problems determine students' internal, external, and negative motivation. Analyzing the study process and motivation of students yields important indications about the nature of educational systems in higher education. Objectives: This study aims to analyze the relationship between the study process, and motivation resources and problems with regard to nursing students in different educational systems in Turkey and to reveal their effects according to a set of variables. Design: This is a descriptive, cross-sectional and correlational study. Settings: Traditional, integrated and problem-based learning (PBL) educational programs for nurses involving students from three nursing schools in Turkey. Participants: Nursing students (n = 330). Methods: The data were collected using the Study Process Questionnaire (R-SPQ-29 and the Motivation Resources and Problems (MRP) Scale. Results: A statistically significant difference was found between the scores on the study process scale, and motivation resources and problems scale among the educational systems. This study determined that the mean scores of students in the PBL system on learning approaches, intrinsic motivation and negative motivation were higher. A positive significant correlation was found between the scales. Conclusions: The study process, and motivation resources and problems were found to be affected by the educational system. This study determined that the PBL educational system more effectively increases students' intrinsic motivation and helps them to acquire learning skills. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. The participants were 459 students at two universities in Turkey. The study data were collected with a Questionnaire Form, Problematic Internet Use Scale (PIUS), University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) Loneliness Scale (Version 3), Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). The Mann-Whitney U Test and Kruskal-Wallis one-way analysis of variance were conducted to examine the differences; and correlation and regression analyses were used to examine the relationships between variables. There was a positive significant correlation between the PIUS and MSPSS and the UCLA Loneliness Scale and a negative significant correlation between the PIUS and Beck Depression Scale (BDS). The female students had higher total PIUS scores. The results also illustrated that there was a statistically significant difference in total PIUS scores according to having a social network account.Öğe The Turkish Version of the Breastfeeding Attrition Prediction Tool(Sage Publications Inc, 2011) Muslu, Gonca Karayagiz; Basbakkal, Zumrut; Janke, JillThis study demonstrates that the original English version of the Breastfeeding Attrition Prediction Tool (BAPT) was successfully adapted to Turkey, as methodologically demonstrated here. The results of this study show that the Turkish version of the BAPT is similar to the original version and that it can be used with Turkish women to identify mothers who may be at high risk of weaning prematurely.Öğe The Turkish Version of the Infant Feeding Intention Instrument (IFI-T)(Erciyes Univ Sch Medicine, 2019) Guneri, Sezer Er; Muslu, Gonca Karayagiz; Guner, OzlemObjective: The purpose of this research was to translate the Infant Feeding Intentions Scale (IFI) into Turkish, modify it according to the Turkish cultural state, and detect the reliability and validity of the translated version. Materials and Methods: The research data was collected in the pregnancy polyclinic from 128 healthy pregnant women at a university hospital. A personal information form and a Turkish version of the IFI scale (IFI-T) were used for data collection. Language equivalence, content validity, construct validity, and predictive validity were used in the validation research of the IFI-T Scale. In the reliability research, Cronbach's alpha coefficient, item analysis, split-test, and re-test methods were used. The t-test was used for the dependent groups to test the time invariance of the scale. Results: The consistency of specialist opinion on the scale, translated into Turkish and back-translated, was revealed (Kendall W=0.600; p>0.05). The factor loading values resulting from the factor analysis that was directed at the construct validity of the scale were between 0.69 and 0.89 and the items were collected under one factor. The scale total correlation value of all items was over 0.20. In the reliability research, the Cronbach's alpha value was 0.86. The test-retest and split-half test results also supported the reliability of the scales. Conclusion: We found that the IFI-T scale can be used as a valid and reliable tool for evaluating the infant feeding intention in pregnant women.
