    Fecundity and spawning of Abralia verany (Rüppell, 1844) (Cephalopoda: Enoploteuthidae) in the Aegean Sea

    A total of 24 female Abralia verany specimens, with a mantle length between 26-47 mm, were investigated. The mean potential fecundity (PF) and mean relative fecundity (RF) of ovaries were calculated as 26584 eggs and 4379 eggs g-1, respectively. The mean egg number determined in the oviduct was 251. Diameters of ripe eggs in the oviduct were approximately 1.01 mm. According to the findings given above the PF values of A. verany in the eastern Mediterranean are higher than the ones off northwest Africa.

    Egg masses of Loligo forbesi were encountered for the first time from a depth of 730 m at Gökova Bay (southern Aegean Sea), extending the known spawning depth in the Mediterranean Sea.

    On reproductive strategies of the epipelagic octopods of the superfamily Argonautoidea (Cephalopoda: Octopoda)

    Females of Tremoctopus violaceus, Argonauta argo and Ocythoe tuberculata in the Aegean Sea have larger eggs than specimens from the western Mediterranean and open ocean; the most probable reason is a shift in the reproductive strategies of Argonautoidea from the Aegean Sea toward the K-side, because of the high stability of this habitat in contrast to the unstable high seas. Potential fecundity of T. violaceus is 100,000-300,000; batch fecundity is 10,000-30,000, but at the beginning and at the end of spawning the batches are smaller. In A. argo potential fecundity is at least 85,000, with batch fecundity of some 2,000-4,000 eggs. The potential fecundity of small, mature O. tuberculata was 300,000 eggs. T. violaceus is an "intermittent terminal spawner", whereas both A. argo and O. tuberculata are "continuous spawners".

    Reproductive biology of the Patagonian bobtail squid, Semirossia patagonica (Sepiolidae: Rossiinae) in the south-west Atlantic

    A total of 104 Semirossia patagonica were collected all over the Patagonian shelf between the depths of 47 and 295 m. Mature female size varied from 10 to 35 mm ML, mature male size was 16-32 mm. Potential fecundity ranged between 527-766 eggs in pre-spawning females, ripe egg size was 3.4-5.0 mm. The oviduct capacity probably was no more than 30 eggs. The maximum number of spermatophores in males was 229. Males transfer 2-19 spermatophores to females during copulation. The ovulation pattern is asynchronous, individual spawning is continuous. Reproduction occurs all year round. Semirossia patagonica is a south-west Atlantic ecological sibling of north-east Atlantic bobtail squids Sepiola spp. and Sepietta spp. Copyright © Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom 2008.

    Systematic position and reproduction of squid of the genus Alloteuthis (Cephalopoda: Loliginidae) in the eastern Mediterranean

    Squid of the genus Alloteuthis from the Aegean Sea and eastern Mediterranean were identified as A. media. It is not possible to distinguish A. media from A. subulata by relative fin length. Both 'species' are probably intraspecific forms. Egg size varied from 1.5 to 2.3 mm. Oocyte maturation in the ovary occurs in batches. The potential fecundity is some 1000-4000 eggs, most of these being released during continuous spawning accompanied by female growth.
