Advertisement call of the Caucasian parsley frog, Pelodytes caucasicus Boulenger 1896 (Pelodytidae, Anura) in Turkey
(Science From Israel-Division Of Laser Pages Publ Ltd, 2002) Kaya, U
The advertisement call of the Caucasian parsley frog, Pelodytes caucasicus, from the northern Black Sea region in Turkey, is described for the first time using quantitative temporal and spectral analyses. The call is composed of three notes, categorized according to duration and amplitude. The three notes typically occur in a fixed sequence. The first two notes are distinguished by their longer duration and amplitude. The last note is a pulse-train, with regular intervals, shorter in duration and lower in amplitude at the beginning and end. The composition of the advertisement call of P. caucasicus is specific to this species and differs from those of the closely related species P. punctatus and P. ibericus.

Comparative morphological and serological studies of three Anatolian Mountain frogs, Rana macrocnemis, R-camerani and R-holtzi (Anura, Ranidae)
(Brill Academic Publishers, 2006) Cevik, IE; Arikan, H; Kaya, U; Atatur, MK
Three currently recognized species of Anatolian mountain frogs were analyzed for species boundaries. Meristic and proportional measurement data of three populations, including two topotypical ones, were evaluated using both univariate and discriminant analyses, and blood-serum samples were analyzed electrophoretically with polyacrylamide-disc electrophoresis. The results indicate that only two distinct mountain frog species inhabit Anatolia. We recommend that R. camerani from Mt Erciyes should be recognized as a synonym of R. macrocnemis.

Metamorphic development of the bronchial columella of the larval bullfrog (Rana catesbeiana)
(Elsevier Science Bv, 2001) Horowitz, SS; Chapman, JA; Kaya, U; Simmons, AM
Histological and immunohistochemical analyses of head and respiratory structures in bullfrog (Rana catesbeiana) tadpoles were undertaken to address the hypothesis that the bronchial columella (BC) is the primary sound conduction pathway in these larval anurans. In postembryonic tadpoles, the BC is composed of fibroblasts surrounded by a Type I collagen matrix, with Type II collagen located in basement membranes at the distal ends. It provides a highly flexible tendon-like attachment between the round window and the membranous sac of the primary bronchus of the ipsilateral lung. As the animals approach metamorphic climax stages, the fibroblasts decrease in number and the BC becomes almost exclusively collagenous. During metamorphic climax, the BC degenerates and is completely resorbed by the time the animal becomes a postmetamorphic froglet. At all larval stages examined, the BC is structurally and immunohistochemically different from both the opercularis muscle of tadpoles and the tympanic columella (stapes homolog) of postmetamorphic animals. These observations suggest that the BC may not be rigid enough to provide an effective coupling between the lungs and the round window. An alternative hypothesis for the function of the BC, based on its structure, is presented. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Morphological investigation of Turkish tree frogs, Hyla arborea and Hyla savignyi (Anura : Hylidae)
(Science From Israel-Division Of Laser Pages Publ Ltd, 2001) Kaya, U
The present study compares different Hyla populations from Anatolia and Turkish Thrace in order to better understand their taxonomic states and spatial distribution. The presence or absence of the anterodorsally oriented spur of the lateral stripe in the inguinal region differentiates the populations of Hyla arborea and Hyla savignyl. Discriminant analysis based on the characters shows that the Rize population differs significantly compared to the other investigated populations of H. arborea. The present study establishes the eastern and western distribution limits of H. arborea and H. savignyi, respectively, in southern Anatolia.

The water frogs (Anura : Ranidae) of Turkey: A morphometric view on systematics
    (British Herpetol Soc, 2002) Sinsch, U; Schneider, H; Kaya, U; Arikan, H
The morphometric variation among 138 water frogs collected in Turkey at twelve localities extending from the Mediterranean coast in the south to the Black Sea coast was analysed using principal component and discriminant analyses. The water frog sample was heterogeneous and included two diagnosable morphs. Comparison with specimens from the type localities of Rana bedriagae (Damascus, Syria) and R. ridibunda (Atyrau, Kazakhstan) demonstrated that the most common water frog taxon in Turkey is R. bedriagae. The second morph was restricted to Ulubey, near Ordu, and was not conspecific with either R. bedriagae or R. ridibunda. It was, however, morphometrically closer to R. bedriagae than to R. ridibunda. As we were unable to locate an extant population of frogs which resembled the preserved sample from Ulubey, the taxonomic status of these morphometrically distinct water frogs remains unresolved. The large water frogs of the Anatolian Lakes District were indistinguishable from R. bedriagae in size-adjusted shape, but their maximum size exceeded that of R. bedriagae from all other localities by about 30 mm. We therefore provisionally refer to them as R. bedriagae caralitana. Reliable taxonomic recommendations require further information on independent character complexes such as advertisement calls and allozymes.
