The development of a specific health-related quality of life (QOL) scale for patients with allergic rhinoconjunctivitis [Allerjik rinokonjonktivit hastalari i·çin özel yaşam kalitesi ölçegi geliştirilmesi]
    (Turkiye Klinikleri, 2009) Köse Ş.; Mandiracioglu A.
Objective: Allergic rhinitis drastically impairs patients' health-related quality of life (QOL). The aim of this study was to assess the psychometric properties of QOL scale for patients with allergic rhinoconjunctivitis (ARC). Material and Methods: An initial draft questionnaire was designed and a cross-sectional validation study was conducted. Three hundred and seventy five adults with ARC in regional hospitals in İzmir were requested to complete the questionnaire. Test-retest was measured using Pearson's correlation coefficient, internal consistency was estimated using Cronbach's alpha. The questionnaire was readministered to 70 patients 7 days after the first visit for evaluating test-retest reliability. Responsiveness was assessed in a group of 30 patients at baseline and after treatment. Paired t-test was used to examine statistically significant changes of mean scores between pre-treatment and post-treatment periods. Known-group validity was established by comparing ARC symptoms severity scores. A principal component analysis was conducted to examine the construct validity. Results: Test-retest reliability of this new scale ranged from 77% to 84% and internal consistency for these items was excellent (Cronbach's alpha= 0.90). Factor analytical techniques revealed three interpretable scales explaining 52.4% of the total variance: the physical and functional, emotional and daily life problems. Five items were cancelled from the list. The QOL score negatively moderate correlated with ARC symptoms severity scores. The improvements in health were statistically significant for the QOL. Conclusion: Our results suggest that the psychometric properties of the quality of life scale for patients with ARC were good. Copyright © 2009 by Türkiye Klinikleri.

Identification of Brucella species isolated from proven brucellosis patients in Izmir, Turkey
    (2005) Köse Ş.; Kiliç S.; Özbel Y.
In many parts of the world, brucellosis has significantly decreased, but it is still a problem in some regions of Turkey. Totally, 11 Brucella strains isolated from the blood cultures of patients with presumptive diagnosis of brucellosis were identified to species and biovar level. For species identification, (i) CO2 requirements of isolates; (ii) detection of urease activation; (iii) detection of H2S production; (iv) dye sensitivities (thionine and basic fuchsin); (v) susceptibility to Brucella phage and (vi) agglutination with monospecific antisera (A and M) were performed. Ten out of 11 isolates were identified as B. melitensis biovar 3 and one out of 11 were identified as B. melitensis biovar 1. The sensitivity of isolates to antibiotics was determined by the E-test. All isolates were found to be sensitive to doxycycline, rifampin, ciprofloxacin and cephtriaxone. Only one out of 11 isolates was found to be semi-sensitive to trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (cotrimoxazole). © 2005 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA.

MEASURING THE KNOWLEDGE LEVEL OF COVID-19 AND ITS TREATMENT IN PHARMACISTS
    (University of Ankara, 2022) Nalli B.; Köse Ş.; Demir Ö.; Gökmen E.; Özdağ E.; Mandiracioğlu A.
Objective: The aim of this study is to measure the knowledge level of pharmacists working in Turkey about COVID-19 Material and Method: The online questionnaire consisting of 16 questions in the form of true-false, developed by the authors after a comprehensive review of the literature, was delivered to pharmacists via social media and professional platforms (such as WhatsApp, Gmail, Instagram, LinkedIn) using the Google form. 364 pharmacists from all over Turkey who filled out the questionnaire were included in the study. Result and Discussion: In this study carried out in Turkey, it was determined that 99.5% of the pharmacists had good knowledge. When the factors affecting the level of knowledge of COVID-19 were examined, in our study, no relationship was found with the independent variables since the level of knowledge was homogeneously high. In the literature, it is reported that age, years of professional experience, having a master's and doctorate education are associated with better knowledge, while the length of experience is associated with the level of knowledge, while in some studies it is stated that no feature is related. However, the fact that it is a cross-sectional study creates a limitation in explaining the cause-effect relationship. Although the number of participants met the sample, it would have been desirable to have more. © 2022 University of Ankara. All rights reserved.

Prevalence of atopy in young healthy population, in Izmir, Turkey
    (1997) Sin A.; Köse Ş.; Terzioglu E.; Kokuludag A.; Sebik F.; Kabakçi T.
The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of atopy especially in young aged group in which allergic diseases are frequently seen. We carried out this study in İzmir which is located on the west coast of Turkey and has all the characteristics of mediterranean climate. However, we evaluated whether geographical characteristics such as climate, dampness, kinds of plant might be affected on prevalence of atopy. Participants were randomly selected and detailed standard questionnaire about if they or their relatives had any allergic symptoms were applied. The skin prick tests (SPT) with standardized allergen extracts were performed and serum total IgE levels were assayed. The study group consisted of 277 individuals, aged 15-25 years. Based on the questionnaire, 123 (44.4%) participants described positive history of atopy. In 127 of 277 subjects (46%) was found at least one positive skin-test response and the most frequent allergen was house-dust mites. SPT was positive in 68 (55.2%) of 123 subjects who had atopic history and in 59 (38%) of 154 subjects who had negative history of atopy. The subjects who had atopic history showed more frequently positive SPT prevalence than the others (p < 0.01). Geometric mean of total IgE level was 105.5 kU/L in SPT positive 127 subjects and 57.7 kU/L in SPT negative 150 subjects. There was a positive relationship between total IgE level and positive SPT (p < 0.01). History of atopy was correlated with total IgE levels in males (p < 0.01) but not in females. Women more often than men reported atopic history in the absence of true atopy.
