Field surveys on recent situation of seahorses in Turkey
    (2012) Filiz H.; Taşkavak E.
Seahorses (genus: Hippocampus) are traded globally for use in traditional medicines, souvenirs and as aquarium fishes. Between 1999 and 2008, surveys were made in order to expose the situation (species distribution, seahorse fishery and trade etc.) of seahorses in Turkey. The surveys were conducted on south and west coasts of Turkey where fisheries activities are extensive and tourism is developed. Firstly fishermen, then owners of souvenir shops, citizens of the area and tourists were interviewed. In these interviews, questionnaires (Seahorse Observation Questionnaire, Seahorse Hunter Questionnaire and Seahorse Trade Questionnaire) were applied to all people. After all, we tried to make a decision about the situation of seahorses and trade in those areas by the evaluation of the questionnaires. Although we determined that seahorses live in all the area and 1-100 number of seahorses were caught as by-catch (per fisherman in a fishery season), we did not observe any fishery targeting seahorses in the area but trade observed in some localities. Domestic consumption was too small and a few souvenir shops sold seahorses. Fishermen generally released seahorses as alive to the sea, but sometimes one or two seahorses were taken for the friends and relatives as souvenir. Also, some interesting findings were obtained about using seahorses as medicine in some localities. © Biharean Biologist, Oradea, Romania, 2012.

First record of Epigonus constanciae (Giglioli, 1880), (deepwater cardinalfish) (Osteichthyes: Epigonidae), from Aegean Sea, Turkey
    (2007) Özaydin O.; Leblebici S.; Ulutürk E.; Filiz H.
Five specimens of Epigonus constanciae (Giglioli, 1880) (deepwater cardinalfish) were captured first time during a bottom trawl survey in Sigacik Bay and off Karaburun, Aegean Sea. This is the first record of the species from the Aegean Sea. A short description certain of morphometric and meristic features of specimens are given.

New records of Bregmaceros atlanticus (Bregmacerotidae), Echiodon dentatus (Carapidae) and Nemichthys scolopaceus (Nemichthyidae) from the Aegean Sea
    (2007) Filiz H.; Akçinar S.C.; Ulutürk E.; Bayhan B.; Taşkavak E.; Sever T.M.; Bilge G.; Irmak E.
Three fish species, Bregmaceros atlanticus Goode et Bean, 1886 (Bregmacerotidae), Echiodon dentatus (Cuvier, 1829) (Carapidae), and Nemichthys scolopaceus Richardson, 1848 (Nemichthyidae) were recorded in the Sigacik and Kuşadasi Bays (Eastern Aegean Sea, Turkey). B. atlanticus and E. dentatus constitute new records for the Turkish waters and the Aegean Sea, respectively. The finding of Nemichthys scolopaceus is the second record for the Aegean Sea.

The occurrence of the cadenat's rockfish, Scorpaena Loppei (Actinopterygii: Scorpaeniformes: Scorpaenidae), in the eastern Aegean Sea
    (2010) Filiz H.; Yapici S.; Akcinar S.C.; Uluturk E.; Dardere H.Z.; Erdem M.
One specimen of the Cadenat's rockfish, Scorpaena loppei Cadenat, 1943 (Scorpeanidae), was caught off Marmaris (eastern Aegean Sea, Turkey) on 27 December 2008 by bottom trawl net. The specimen was 56.15 mm total length. S. loppei is evidently rare in the Aegean Sea than it is in the western Mediterranean.

Sexual dimorphism in the head, mouth, and body morphology of the smallspotted catshark, Scyliorhinus canicula (Linnaeus, 1758) (Chondrichthyes: Scyliorhinidae) from Turkey
    (2006) Filiz H.; Taşkavak E.
Males of the smallspotted catshark, Scyliorhinus canicula, have a longer and narrower mouth than females, resulting in pronounced sexual dimorphism. The length/width ratio of the mouth is 0.55 in males and 0.50 in females. Other head measurements also significantly differ between the sexes, i.e., the snout-spiracle and snout-pectoral distances. Body measurements that differ between the sexes include pelvic to anal, pectoral inner edge, pelvic to median tip, upper caudal, and total body lengths. Reasons for these differences are discussed.
