Antibacterial efficacy of prophylactic ozone treatment on patients with fixed orthodontic appliances
    (2013) Aykut-Yetkiner A.; Eden E.; Ertugrul F.; Ergin E.; Ateş M.
Objective. This study investigated the efficacy of ozone on microflora of patients with fixed orthodontic appliances. Materials and methods. Ten subjects undergoing fixed appliance therapy were enrolled in the study. Before any application, two elastic ligatures were removed with the aid of a sterile probe from the premolar brackets on the upper right and lower left jaws for baseline bacteriological counts. Then ozone gas was applied for 180 s by running the device on prophylaxis mode with included mouth tray according to the manufacturer's recommendations on all brackets. After the ozone application, two other elastic ligatures were removed from the opposite sides of the mouth of the patients. One week after the application two more elastic samples, which were not changed in the previous session, were collected from the upper right and lower left premolar brackets. The elastic ligatures were immersed in transfer solutions and cultured to determine the Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus acidophilus. Statistical analysis of the data was obtained by paired Student's t-tests. Results. The ozone treatment reduced the S. mutans and L. acidophilus immediately after the application and these reductions were found to be statistically significant (p = 0.038 and p = 0.020). Both the S. mutans and L. acidophilus values increased by the 1-week period and the S. mutans values were significantly higher than the baseline values (p = 0.01). Conclusion. It can be concluded that the ozone treatment may have an instantaneous lethal effect on S. mutans and L. acidophilus; however, within the limitations of this study, a long-term preventive effect could not be observed. © 2013 Informa Healthcare.

Autoimmune Pancreatitis after a Seven-Year History of Suspicious Pancreatic Cancer
    (S. Karger AG, 2021) Ergin E.; Oruc N.; Özütemiz Ö.
In this case report, we present a case of autoimmune pancreatitis (AIP) diagnosis in a patient after a 7-year history of suspicious pancreatic cancer. Kim's and Japanese criteria were used to diagnose AIP. Our case avoided undesirable invasive procedures and recovered thanks to the proper diagnosis and timely treatment with prednisone. Early and accurate diagnosis of AIP, in this case, had a significant impact on the treatment and prognosis process. © 2021

Color assessment after bleaching with hydrogen peroxide versus ozone: A randomized controlled clinical trial
    (Academy of General Dentistry, 2017) Aykut-Yetkiner A.; Ertugrul F.; Eden E.; Aladag A.; Ergin E.; Ozcan M.
This randomized controlled clinical trial evaluated the color change of teeth bleached with either hydrogen peroxide (HP) or ozone (OZ). A total of 26 patients with a mean age of 36.2 years (SD, 8.7 years) who met the inclusion criteria were enrolled in the study. The subjects were randomly assigned to receive chairside bleaching using 40% HP or gaseous OZ. Maxillary dental arch vacuum trays were constructed with circumferential openings in the middle portion of the maxillary incisors at their labial surfaces. These trays were used for measuring color-first at baseline and then immediately and 48 hours after postbleaching-and were not used in bleaching. Changes in color were determined using CIE L*a*b*coordinates. Analysis of the data revealed that, while overall color change (E*) values of the HP and OZ groups did not show statistically significant differences immediately after bleaching (P = 0.114), E*values were significantly different 48 hours postbleaching (P = 0.00). Visible color changes were not obtained with either HP or OZ immediately postbleaching. The greatest visible color change occurred with HP 48 hours postbleaching. © 2017 by the Academy of General Dentistry.

Effect of Classical Turkish Music on Pain and Anxiety of Patients undergoing Bone Marrow Aspiration and Biopsy: A Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial
(Guilan University of Medical Sciences, 2022) Ergin E.; Kahriman F.; Ay H.C.; Yücel Ş.Ç.
Introduction: Bone Marrow Aspiration and Biopsy (BMAB) is a painful procedure that can causes anxiety in patients. Music can help reduce pain and anxiety levels in patients by directing their attention from negative stimuli towards pleasant and encouraging thoughts. Objective: This study aims to determine the effect of classical Turkish music on pain and anxiety of patients undergoing BMAB. Materials and Methods: This is a randomized, controlled trial conducted on 68 patients undergoing BMAB who were selected from the hematology outpatient clinics in a hospital in İzmir, western Turkey. They were randomly divided into two groups of control (n=34) who received the general procedure only and the music group (n=34) who listened to classical Turkish music for 15 minutes before the procedure. Data were collected using a demographic form, Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), and State Anxiety subscale of Spielberger’s State-Trait Anxiety Inventory. Chi-square was used for comparing categorical variables, and t-test and ANOVA were used for comparing numerical variables. Bonferroni test was used for post hoc comparisons. A P<0.05 statistically significant. In case of a significant difference between the groups, Cohen’s d effect size was calculated. Results: In the music group (Mean±SD age=63.73±14.81 years), 62% were male, 71% were married, 76% had a secondary education or lower, and 49.1% reported that biopsy was for diagnostic purposes. I n the control group (Mean±SD age=51.76±19.45 years), 50% were female, 53% were married, 62% had a secondary education or lower, and 50.9% reported that biopsy was for diagnostic purposes. A statistically significant difference was found in the mean VAS scores of both groups before and after the treatment (P=0.001). A significant difference was found in the state anxiety level only in the music group before and after the treatment (P=0.003). Conclusion: Classical Turkish music prior to BMAB can reduce the pain and anxiety of patients. It is recommended for nurses to use music therapy to reduce the pain and anxiety of patients undergoing BMAB © 2022. Journal of Holistic Nursing and Midwifery. All Rights Reserved.

Exploring Nursing Students' Attitudes and Readiness for Artificial Intelligence: A Cross-Sectional Study
    (Elsevier Inc., 2024) Yalcinkaya T.; Ergin E.; Yucel S.C.
Background: Understanding nursing students' attitudes towards and readiness for artificial intelligence (AI) is crucial for the effective integration of AI into nursing education and practice. AI has the potential to enhance clinical decision-making and personalize patient care. Aim: This study aimed to determine nursing students' attitudes towards and readiness for AI. Methods: This was a cross-sectional descriptive study conducted at a nursing faculty in the west of Turkey and included 291 nursing students. Data were collected using the Individual Information Form, the General Attitudes towards Artificial Intelligence Scale (GAAIS), and the Medical Artificial Intelligence Readiness Scale for Medical Students (MAIRS-MS). Results: The mean scores for Positive GAAIS, Negative GAAIS, and MAIRS-MS were 3.86 ± 0.62, 3.23 ± 0.82, and 76.93 ± 13.63, respectively. Fourth-year students scored significantly higher on the MAIRS-MS compared to second-year students (F = 3.750, p = 0.011). A positive correlation was found between MAIRS-MS and GAAIS scores (r = 0.330, p < 0.01). Conclusions: The findings are anticipated to guide nursing faculties and academicians in incorporating AI into the curriculum. © 2024 Organization for Associate Degree Nursing

A 31-year-old man with pneumonia and ampiema was treated with antibiotics and drainage. Hemophagocytic syndrome, characterized with pancytopenia was arised during this treatment. Nosocomial infection due to pancytopenia was treated with antibiotics. Hemophagocytic syndrome was recovered spontaneously after the treatment of this nosocomial infection. Such a severe hemophagocytic syndrome due to infection is a rare condition.
