    The Translation Chamber of the High Gate Bab-i Ali and the Dilemma of its Translators Based on Distrust until Master Teacher Ishak Efendi

    In the Ottoman Empire, in which war, politics, power and sovereign autocracy always had the highest premise, the important field of activity of translation was carried out until 1821 mostly by non-Muslims who spoke foreign languages, converted Muslims and by language boys (tr. Dil Oglanlari) specially trained by the European states. However, with the fall of the Ottoman Empire came an increasing distrust of non-Muslim translators, as they had access to the most confidential state secrets and co-represented the state. And this suspicion was confirmed with the treason investigations in the principalities of Wallachia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, when it became known that Constantine Mourouzis, who served as interpreter of the Divan-i Humayun governing council during the Greek uprising that broke out in 1821, had allied himself with the insurgents. This decisive event ultimately led to the Ottoman Empire having to completely rethink and repurpose its translator policies, particularly in the Balkans. In this regard, the Reformation plan to train their own institutional translators laid the foundation for the establishment of a translation chamber in the government office of the Sublime Porte Bab-i Ali. This study aims to show the historical development of the Translation Office, which played a central role in translators and interpreters in the Ottoman Empire, especially from the 19th century. The history of the development of the translation office and the engineering houses in relation to its most important translators and the work of its teacher Ishak Efendi should be traced. In this context, the dilemmas in which the translators and teachers of the time found themselves against them due to their negative experiences and distrust should be highlighted. The primary focus will be on the career of the teacher Ishak Efendis, his training and his works, since as head of the Translation Office he exerted a great influence on the modernization of the Ottoman Empire and contributed to it.
