The distribution of uranium and thorium in samples taken from different polluted marine environment
    (Elsevier Science Bv, 2007) Akyil, S.; Yusof, A. M.
Concentrations of uranium and thorium in seawater, sediment and some marine species taken from along the coastal areas of Malaysia were determined spectrophotometrically. The uranium and thorium concentrations in seawater were found to vary ranging from 1.80 to 4.1 and 0.14 to 0.88 mu g/L, respectively. The concentration of uranium in sediment samples was reported to range from 3.00 to 6.60 mu g/g while those of thorium were slightly lower ranging from 0.01 to 0.68 mu g/g. The uptake of uranium and thorium in marine species was found to be rather low. Similar variations in total alpha activities in samples were also observed with the total alpha activities relatively lower than the beta activities in most samples. (C) 2006 Elsevier B.V. Study of the behaviour of thoriurn adsorption on PAN/zeolite composite adsorbent
(Elsevier Science Bv, 2007) Kaygun, A. Kilincarslan; Akyil, S.
The adsorption behaviour of thorium from aqueous solutions by a composite adsorbent has been investigated by a batch technique. The thorium adsorption on composite adsorbent was studied as a function of initial concentration, pH, shaking time and temperature. The sorption of thorium at the determined optimum conditions follows Langnmir, Freundlich and D-R type isotherms. Langmuir constants Q = 0.04 mmol g(-1) and b = 64.94 L mol(-1) and of D-R parameter X-m = 0.04, beta = 0.79 and of sorption energy E = 0.80 and Freundlich constants 1/n = 3.12 and c(m) = 0.012 mmol g(-1) were evaluated. Thermodynamic parameters such as Delta H and Delta S were found to be 37.32 kJ mol(-1) and 206.17 J mol(-1) K-1, respectively. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
