Evaluating the thermal comfort properties of Rize's traditional hemp fabric (Feretiko) using a thermal manikin
    (Elsevier Ltd, 2019) Tama D.; Isler M.; Abreu M.J.
In the present research, the thermal properties of the traditional fabric of the Rize city (Turkey) were investigated. A Feretiko, which is a fabric produced from hemp fibers at handlooms, were chosen and the thermal properties were evaluated via thermal manikin as well as the Alambeta tester and Air permeability tester. The thermal manikin tests were performed at 23 °C ± 1 constant ambient temperature and 75 ± 5% relative humidity regarding to the past annual average temperature and relative humidity data of Rize city were considered. The thermal resistance of Feretiko was measured 0.011 m2K/W by Alambeta tester and the total clothing insulation of the shirt manufactured from Feretiko was measured as 0.032 m2K/W by thermal manikin. Moreover, in ASHRAE Standard 55-2013, the clothing insulation of a long-sleeve shirt ensemble stated as 0.25 clo. The clothing insulation of the shirt manufactured from Feretiko was 0.20 clo, which is close to the value stated in the standard. © 2019 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

An investigation on the comfort properties for different disposable surgical gowns by using thermal manikin
    (2008) Pamuk O.; Abreu M.J.; Öndogan Z.
The thermal properties of clothing materials, which relate thermal comfort of the user, involve the heat transfer between a clothed body and the environment. The thermal resistance of a clothing system represents a quantitative evaluation of how good the clothing provides thermal barrier to the wearer. In many years, thermal manikins have been used to measure clothing insulation and to evaluate the thermal environment. The clothing industry uses manikins for development of clothing systems with improved thermal properties. The aim of this paper is to research thermal comfort properties of different disposable surgical gowns (Spunlace-normal, Spunlace-reinforced, and SMS-normal) by using the thermal manikin.

Tensile strength properties of woven and nonwoven surgical gown fabrics [Svojstva vlacne cvrstoce tkanih i netkanih materijala za kirurške ogrtace]
    (2008) Pamuk O.; Öndogan Z.; Abreu M.J.
Surgical gowns are the most important item among the surgical garments. The main function of surgical gowns is to protect the medical personnel against a risk of an infection by micro-organisms. There are two types of surgical gowns on the market today, disposable (nonwoven) and reusable (woven). The aim of this research was to investigate the tensile strength properties of woven and nonwoven fabrics which are used for surgical gown manufacturing. The wet and dry tensile strength of nonwoven fabrics were assessed in the cross and machine directions, while the dry tensile strength of woven fabrics were tested in the weft and warp directions. It was observed that the woven fabrics presented higher tensile properties when compared to the nonwoven fabrics for dry tensile strength values. The woven fabrics which include carbon fibers presented the highest tensile strength value. Spunlace was the superior nonwoven fabric for both machine and cross directions.

The thermal comfort properties of reusable and disposable surgical gown fabrics
    (2009) Pamuk O.; Ondocjan Z.; Abreu M.J.
Surgical gowns are worn to protect both patients and the surgical team from contamination during an operation. They were initially manufactured from cotton fabrics, while modern gowns use various types of woven and non-woven fabrics. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the thermal comfort properties of the different fabrics that are used in the manufacture of surgical gowns. Eight commercially available surgical gown fabrics were evaluated in this study. Three of the fabrics were nonwoven(Spunlace, SMS, Spun - bond), and five of the fabrics were woven(100% cotton; 50% polyester - 50% cotton; 65% polyester - 35% cotton; 66% polyester - 33% cotton - 1% carbon; 99% polyester - 1% carbon). The thermal conductivity, thermal absorption, and thermal resistance values were measured with Alambeta thermal comfort testing equipment. The thickness of each of the fabrics was measured to investigate the correlation between thermal resistance and thickness. The data obtained from this research were evaluated statistically.
