Öğe Green synthesis of titanium nanoparticles using a sustainable microalgal metabolite solution for potential biotechnological activities(Wiley, 2023) Mutaf, Tuğce; Çalışkan, Gülizar; Özel, Hulki; Akağaç, Gülsah; Öncel, Suphi S.; Elibol, MuratIn this study, green synthesis of titanium nanoparticles using liquids metabolites of microalgae, Porphyridium cruentum, was performed to evaluate potential biotechnological activity. The rising rates of multidrug-resistant bacteria and the number of cancer patients are driving the search for novel antimicrobial and anticancer agents to combat this threat. In recent years, with the increasing number of studies, nanomaterials are starting to be better understood and are emerging as a solution to this problem. Especially, green synthesized nanoparticles with anticancer, antioxidant, and antimicrobial activities have potential in biomedical applications because of their eco-friendly and biocompatible nature. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images revealed that spherical shaped Ti-NPs' size ranged from 62 to 133 nm. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of antibacterial activity of Ti-NPs and chitosan-coated Ti-NPs against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus using disc diffusion assay. It demonstrated the concentration-dependent cytotoxic effect of Ti-NPs of human prostate adenocarcinoma (PC-3), human alveolar adenocarcinoma (A549), and human mammary gland adenocarcinoma (MDA-MB) cancer cell lines. This present study shows promising outcomes for possible future applications of synthesized Ti-NPs as a novel antibacterial and cytotoxic agent for biomedical applications such as drug delivery, biosensor, and hyperthermia.Öğe Microalgae pigments as a sustainable approach to textile dyeing: A critical review(Elsevier, 2023) Mutaf-Kılıç, Tuğce; Demir, Aslı; Elibol, Murat; Öncel, Suphi S.Microalgae derived pigments, such as phycobiliproteins, chlorophylls, and carotenoids, offer eco-friendly al-ternatives to synthetic dyes. These pigments are known for their vibrant colors, as well as their antimicrobial, antioxidative, and UV protective properties, making them commonly used in the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries. Recently, they have also gained attention in the textile dyeing industry. Compared to other natural dye sources like plants, bacteria, and fungi, microalgae pigments possess significant potential as natural textile dyes. They exhibit high pigment productivity, more sustainable production systems, current industrial-scale production, and a lack of seasonal dependency. This review aims to provide an overview of the current state, limitations, and future prospects regarding the utilization of microalgae pigments as textile dyes. The report emphasizes the commercial availability of microalgae pigments, highlights current studies exploring their dyeing potential on various textile materials, and discusses the development techniques aimed at enhancing dyeing performance. This emerging and promising research field has the potential to revolutionize the pro-duction of eco-friendly and sustainable textile products, while also contributing to a reduction in the use of synthetic dyes in the textile industry.Öğe Modüler tip endüstriyel atıksu biyoreaktörü tasarımı(Ege Üniversitesi, 2012) Öncel, Suphi S.; Günerken, Emre; Vardar Sukan, FaziletBiyolojik atık su arıtımında kullanılan sistemlerde karşılaşılan dönüşüm verimliliği ve enerji gideri sorunlarına ek olarak büyük kurulum alanı gereksinimi nedeniyle araştırmalar küçük alanlarda iş görebilecek ünitelerin tasarımına yönelmiştir. Küçük çapta karşılaşılan tasarım kısıtlarının başında enerji ve atık dönüşüm verimlerinde oluşan kayıplarla, kurulum maliyetlerinde karşılaşılan artışlar gelmektedir. Bu sorunlardan yola çıkarak çalışmada kısıtlı alanlarda etkin şekilde kullanılabilen modüler, kullanıcı dostu endüstriyel atık su biyorektörü tasarımının yapılması amaçlanmıştır. Bu amaçla hesaplamalı akışkanlar dinamiği bakış açısından yararlanarak sistem dizaynı oluşturulmuştur. Ardından tasarlanan sistemin kilit ünitesi olan kartuş ünitesi prototipi yaptırılarak seçilen mikroorganizma ve immobilizasyon materyali çeşitli deneyler yapılarak sistem etkinliği araştırılmıştır.;Endüstriyel atık su, biyoreaktör, hesaplamalı akışkanlar mekaniği, modüler sistemler.;Industrial wastewater, bioreactor, computational fluid dynamics, modular systems.Öğe The potential of microalgal sources as coating materials: A case study for the development of biocompatible surgical sutures(Oxford Univ Press, 2023) Tokgöz, Merve; Yarkent, Cagla; Köse, Ayse; Öncel, Suphi S.Sutures are considered as surgical materials that form excellent surfaces to integrate the postoperative parts of the body. These materials present suitable platforms for potential bacterial penetrations. Therefore, coating these biomedical materials with biocompatible compounds is seen as a potential approach to improve their properties while avoiding adverse effects. The aim of this study was to evaluate Arthrospira platensis, Haematacoccus pluvialis, Chlorella minutissima, Botyrococcus braunii, and Nostoc muscorum as potential surgical suture coating materials. Their crude extracts were absorbed into two different sutures as poly glycolic (90%)-co-lactic acid (10%) (PGLA) and poly dioxanone (PDO); then, their cytotoxic effects and antibacterial activities were examined. Both N. muscorum-coated sutures (PGLA and PDO) and A. platensis-coated (PGLA and PDO) sutures did not induce any toxic effect on L929 mouse fibroblast cells (>70% cell viability). The highest antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus was achieved with N. muscorum-coated PGLA and A. platensis-coated PGLA at 11.18 & PLUSMN; 0.54 mm and 9.52 & PLUSMN; 1.15 mm, respectively. These sutures were examined by mechanical analysis, and found suitable according to ISO 10993-5. In comparison with the commercial antibacterial agent (chlorohexidine), the results proved that N. muscorum extract can be considered as the most promising suture coating material for the human applications.
