Consumption in this industry had spectacular growth as well, such that clothing production doubled between 2000 and 2014. Therefore, understanding the concept of sustainability and applying its requirements in this sector became essential. It refers to the ability to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. The focus of this book chapter is to evaluate the concept of sustainability in a general framework regarding the fashion and clothing industry. To achieve this, the chapter provides an overview of sustainable development and examines the triple bottom line of sustainability, which includes economic, social, and environmental factors. Afterwards, the two outstanding movements of the fashion and clothing industry, namely fast fashion and sustainable fashion, were examined in detail; the impact of these fashion movements on the environment, humans, and economics were comparatively assessed. In addition, the three key strategies, reduce, reuse, and recycle of sustainability, were investigated towards the fashion and clothing industry. © 2024 by Nova Science Publishers, Inc.
