Awareness of human Papillomavirus and human papillomavirus vaccines in Cypriot population

dc.description.abstractBACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections worldwide. HPV may lead to genital warts, cervical dysplasia, abnormal Papanicolaou (Pap) tests, and cervical, oropharyngeal, vulvar, penile cancer. The aim of our study is to evaluate of awareness of HPV and HPV vaccines in Cypriot population. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional, observational study conducted from December 2016 to February 2017 at Near East University. Data were collected through self reported questionnaires. After exclusion of incomplete responses, data analysis was performed on the remaining 250 questionnaires. RESULTS: The percentage of those with graduate, university and high school education levels were 31.4%, 43.8% and 21%, respectively. Participants were told that the HPV vaccine was heavily influenced by doctors, internet sites, social media and television 42.4%, 25.9%, 14.1%, and 9.4%, respectivetly. Eleven percent of the participants thought that HPV vaccine is not required, 6.8% thought that HPV vaccine is not protective, 5.5% did not approve having HPV vaccine due to financial reasons. CONCLUSIONS: In order to reach an adequate level of education about HPV and adverse events that may be caused, informing should be ensured especially in the schools, on social media, and at doctor visits.en_US
