Özet

Heart failure is an important public health problem associatedwith morbidity, mortality and health expenditures and thereare various options in its treatment. Left ventricular assist devices area frequently used treatment alternative to heart transplantation in endstageheart failure. Left ventricular assist devices are used both as atemporary treatment until a suitable donor is found in patients who arewaiting for a heart transplant, and as a lifelong treatment when thepatient is not suitable for a heart transplant. Although the survivalrates are quite high in this treatment option, clinical follow-up andsystematic care of patients are critical. Although left ventricular assistdevices are a life-saving treatment option, these patients may experiencesome major complications due to advanced heart failure, openheart surgery technique and implanted device. Major complicationsseen in these patients are bleeding, cardiac arrhythmias, infectionsand neurological events. These complications affect quality of lifeand survival. Therefore, management of complications in the postoperativeperiod becomes the focal point in patients who have implantedleft ventricular assist device. Although these complications are noteasy to manage, nurses should be equipped with advanced knowledgeabout the causes, symptoms, and appropriate nursing care of thesecomplications. At the same time, nurses need to know about the technologyof left ventricular assist devices for the management of thesecomplications. In this article, major complications seen after left ventricularassist device implantation and nursing care are discussed.
